im in so much pain right now, i cant talk anD i CAN barely think. I know this is a common condition for car guys. I had class today, the entire class period was hell and driving home I was leaning to the right with my left hand on top of the wheel and my right on the stick, that was the only way I could shift without screaming. Its been taking me 5+ minutes to get in and out of my truck. I have a doctors appt in the morning before work but this is agony right now. Im only 22, but feel 80. what sucks the most is Im allergic to all otc pain meds except tylenol, which does next to nothing

Could be a number of things, I deliver auto parts for a living, coulda been that. Couldve been getting jakes alfa from colo springs on the flatbed, coulda been working on my truck, coulkdve slept wrong, who kniows

Lay down flat on your back, put a pillow or two under your knees to take the pressure off of your back, and make sure to have a cold pack on the area that hurts. I find that helps a ton.

If its muscular its directly over my spine, but it could be muscular. the only bone Ive ever broken was in my foot, so Im not sure if its spinal or muscular

Just double-checking- no Naproxen, no Ibuprofen?
I would ice it for 20 mins, then off for an hour, then ice for 20, etc.
No heat/ice cycle until later.

In the long run Yoga helps, or any kind of back stretching and strengthining. I’ve had issues for a while, keep at the PT and things are ok.. Doctor will only prescribe meds, you need a good physical therapist. Probably start with heat/ice and manual therapy then go to the stretches and strengthening exercises.

Apply ice: ice pack or similar wrapped in a towel. On for ~20 minutes, off for 1.5 hours, repeat as needed.
There are some arguments for applying heat, but I mostly hear of people doing that after a day or two.
Also, get/stay hydrated. It’s amazing how much water can help relieve muscle pain.

I used to do yoga, got to the point where I could stick my foot behind my head. It actually really helped, I should get back into it

naturally. when I broke my foot, I was out of state and didnt seek medical attention till about 10 mos after the fact. I broke my 4th & 5th metatarsel and kept walking on it

Second the yoga, also recommend Pilates. Sometimes low back pain can be caused by glute problems - most people have these weird dimples on their low back, if you jab a thumb into the muscle about 3-4 inches below those and it’s painful that could be it.

Damn dude, I’ve had lower back pain before but never like what you’re describing. What helped me a lot was a chiropractor - I just go for the adjustments and my guy has showed me how to use trigger points to get the muscle to stop spasming. If that doesn’t help, you might need to see a neurologist if there’s any nerve involvement. Once you’re feeling better, get back to yoga to help your flexibility.

Do you have any way to invert yourself? If I don’t have an inversion table available, hanging upside down stretches my back enough alleviate some pain.

I had chronic back problems for years, first noticed in my early 20's, and it got progressively worse until a couple years ago when it became intolerable and I had a spinal fusion surgery. The improvement is nothing short of miraculous.
If I have a piece of advice for you it would be to consider seeing a neurosurgeon instead of an orthopedic surgeon.

Hmm. The foot won’t help, and with back pain posture is everything. In the future go and see a sports physio for a couple of half hour sessions. I’ve always found them the best for fixing back/leg/pelvic pain, and they’ll give you information to take away and self-help/prevention tips.
In the meantime I would take whatever painkillers you’re able to, even if you think they don’t help, and try a few stretches to open out your lower back and see how they affect your condition.
One of the better stretches is (actually for sciatica and slipped disc pain relief) :
Lie on your back on the edge of a bed or sofa. Keeping both shoulders against the surface, with your knee bent raise your inside leg to 90° and roll your leg and your hips over to the edge of the sofa. Go as far as you can while keeping your shoulders down. Slowly come back after a few seconds and repeat as you wish. Swap around to the other side and do the same with the other leg.
Otherwise you can practise while standing keeping your back straight, with your butt pushed out and hips rolled forward, keeping your shoulders slightly further back from where they’d naturally slump.

I smoke weed but my doctor tells me to use vicodin and muscle relaxers. Bah. Also a hot shower followed by light yoga goes a long way.

Exercise more. Just heard a story on NPR today saying exercise is overwhelmingly the best way to prevent back pain. Drugs and braces basically do nothing. For now? Take ibuprofen and apply heat.

I messed up my back a couple of years ago shoveling snow, it hurt so bad I thought I fucked something up big time. Went to the E.R., with a high fever, shaking and monster lower back pain. A few things I found out after that little episode.
1. Demerol is a blessing. A teeny, tiny amount, and all pain is just...gone. I can see why people get hooked on it.
2. Stretching and cold packs are very helpful. Heat make it feel better, but will only make it worse.
3. A TENS unit is also very helpful. It sends small electrical impulses to the affected area. It feels weird, but does help.
4. See your doctor, and a chiropractor if you think that would be benificial.

Hey, Denver. I’m sorry to hear your back is acting up! I don’t have any great remedies. I’ve tried massage, stretching, yoga, alcohol, etc. but nothing better than about a C- grade for results. Others here seem to have some more solid advice and experience.
Really enjoyed meeting up at HPR in September. Hope the new year is treating you well! Will txt you the 2016 track days, in case you’re interested.

i’ve had back issues too , just had to lie on bed , do a few stretches 2 times a day , after about 2-3 weeks all good.
have you been liting anything heavy at work?

My wife and I both have back issues from an bad accident. Through my insurance I was able to get a really good TENS Unit. TENS is Trans-Cutaneous Electronic Nerve Stimulation. The device uses sticky pads to attach to your skin around the area that is hurting and sends electrical frequencies into the muscles to prevent nerves from sending pain stimuli. It also helps relax the muscles too. My wife is too sensitive to use it, but when I’m am in severe pain, it really saves the day. Ask your doctor about it. You can buy them over the internet, but you get what you pay for. If you’re Dr. can give you a script for one, you may be able to get a better one.
Also, moist heating pads, get the deep muscle spasms really well for me. This brand below is the one I’ve had the best experience with. By moist, I don’t mean you get these wet though. But I use the thin long one for my neck because it allows you to wrap it around your neck and it stays wrapped using velcro. When I get bad bad headaches from the tension in my neck, this has been awesome. I bought one of these for my brother who is an electrician and always messing up his back. He has told me how much it has helped also.

As someone that has been thru 2 back surgeries for a herniated disk, ice it as much as you can stand, and get to a doctor ASAP.
