So I just finished my second diorama, (pic below and lald link !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) when my wife approaches me about making a collaboration diorama. She suggested a rally stage. Thing is, neither her nor I know much about rally races, besides that they are awesome.
So oppo, I could trudge through the hundreds of rally stages, looking for inspiration, but I figure “why not ask oppo their favorites and look at those?” So, what are your favorite rally stages? Anything really cool I should look at?

You’ll have to find some way to suspend dirt in the air.
(Although a scene like this would be possible to do. How are your paper mache skills?)

Cattle Guard at 100AW is a great shot:

I usually use spackle for EVERTTHING. It makes a nice smooth base. I can probably use cardboard to make the hilly areas.

A trick I’ve used to build up landscapes is to tape down balled up newspapers into the shape I want, then laying paper mache over it to make a shell. It comes out super light, but strong enough to build on top of.

Is that the name of the stage? Cattle guard?

Nice, will have to try that.

Have you done an image search for “rally car diorama” yet?

Have not got that far yet. The collaboration was that MrsZtp would whittle the animals, so I was figuring a car racing with animals in the scenery.

A rally car that’s had to stop and wait for cattle/sheep to cross the road?

The name of the stage is Camelback (or Ollie’s Camel, depending on the year). It’s part of the 100 Acre Wood rally. I co-drove the car in the first picture, here’s the video (jump at 10:35)

Cool, didn’t know that. I know you in a Fiesta, and I just found these photos on the Interweb.
Thinking about coming to 100AW this year, but we’ll see. If not, I’m thinking STPR might be in the cards instead. I can probably get media creds for STPR but not sure about 100AW.

I’ve actually competed in 16 different cars now (only two of which were Fiestas).
Both events are fantastic, you’ll have a blast at either one

Ooh I just had the perfect idea about how to create a muddy road: cover the road in spackle and “drive” a car you don’t really care about through the wet spackle a few times to make tracks. After it dries, paint it and then brush (not spray) lacquer onto it to make it look wet.
Can you tell I used to make models?

Nope, couldn't tell at all, :).
