A Vista Cruiser for your time.

I’m taking a week-long trip through Vermont (and maybe up to Montreal) soon because I’m running a marathon outside of Burlington. I’m trying to plan what else to do (besides eat a ton of Ben & Jerry’s). I'm thinking of camping for a couple nights and was considering Quechee and Grand Isle state parks but I'm open to suggestions. What would Oppo do?

I’d find a Vista cruiser and cruise the vistas. Seriously though...I’ve never been to Vermont so I’m useless to you

Not entirely useless - you served the purpose of proving that Kinja notifications aren't working! I've only been to ski so this is new to me too. I've heard the brewery scene is awesome but I can't drink much until after the run.

Yay, Opponauts are visiting Vermont! I live right outside Burlington, and my dad is actually going to be handcycling the marathon I believe you’re referring to (on South Hero? Or Grand Isle or one of those? Next weekend?). Camping is a little cold this season, but might be worth a shot. There are places that rent wood-heated cabins for the night; I know of a few in southern VT, where I grew up, and although I haven’t heard of any in my time up north, I’m sure they’re around. This could be a warmer alternative. Hit Church Street in Burlington (obviously), and check out the waterfront. There are some awesome hip places around here, and there’s always something going on.

Hope you have a blast!

YES! That race. Small world! Your dad will be done much quicker than me.

I actually ran a marathon around now in Maine a couple years ago and camped at Acadia after that so I’m alright with chilly, especially since your state parks apparently seem to have hot showers available.

My best friend just moved to Fletcher or Fairfield or one of those tiny towns east of Burlington so I’m looking forward to visiting the city as well. And eating. And drinking. And maybe never leaving, except I think Vermont is still more expensive than Denver.

But... That’s Road Atlanta. Back when you’d hit a cliff if you fucked up the exit to the esses.

Ralleye wheels with beauty rings and BFG white letters never go out of style.

It is. But my auto photo supply on this igadget is lacking. And hey, that Road Atlanta trip is the earliest memories I have of camping!

Quechee Gorge is a nice visit, and it’s in my favourite part of the state. Vermont is beautiful all over and the colours will be out soon - expect lots of other tourists so hotels can be pricey and booked-up. For camping, I think the state parks are open for visits but I don’t know if you can camp or not. You’ll need to call and confirm.

If you come up to Montreal - or even if you decide not to cross the border - take the Champlain Islands drive, because it’s a nice and scenic. If you cross over, cross at the Alburg/Noyan crossing (the only US/Canada crossing where the border agents share a building!) and go get some cheese from Fritz Kaiser .
