I was planning on buying a new car next summer after having to hold off this year due to the birth of my daughter. Unfortunately, it makes way more financial sense at this point to buy a house next spring.

A house would actually lower our monthly “rent” payment by about $100 and we’d double our space and gain a garage but that kind of hit on my credit means holding off on buying a car until 2017.

I’m kinda bummed but as a financial professional I know it’s the smart thing to do. So I’m going to have a beer and post pictures of the cars I was considering.

Thank you for your time fellow Oppo-nauts.

That’s ok, and nothing wrong with being smart with your money.

Besides, nothing wrong with driving an older car :)

It sucks now, but it’ll be better in the long run.

As a family man who is having to put off purchase of the car I want until at least 2018, I feel your pain, Brother. But home ownership is worth it. It'll make you happy in a whole different way.

Get the house. I’ve had a few, and they’ve been pretty good investments overall. Right now we’re looking for an apartment to buy in Manhattan. I have actually uttered the phrase: “you won’t believe what you don’t get for 900K.” I don’t know who I am anymore.

Keep your current DD and get a project car. If you play it safe it won’t be a money pit. If it’s old enough you could probably get collector insurance. Fill your new garage.

Think miata or maybe a mk2 GTI. Or 6 cylinder car from 60s.

Yeah, it just makes way too much sense to get the house, which will appreciate and hopefully I can lock in a low rate before they really start to go up rather than throwing away money every month in the form of rent.

Plus, this time next year I’ll be looking at a promotion which will hopefully add about $10,000 to my salary

it’s okay! soon you’ll be in the position of my stepdad!

Well my current car needs it’s front suspension redone and new brake rotors/pads, plus someone smashed the front end/hood at my old job and I thought “Screw it, I want a new car anyways” .

But the wife’s dad is mechanic and he said he’d help me (i.e. show me) for free. I’m going use his garage/tools and I bought the parts myself, so now I don’t feel so bad fixing up a 10 year old Hyundai.

I sure as hell wasn’t going to drop the $5000+ to have the shop fix it lol

Yeah , it kills me essentially throwing $800 a month down the toilet for rent when it could be put toward home equity

Yep, you only get one shot at raising your kids right, I can find a new car whenever

And you could work on your own cars anytime, in the garage. Just get a kerosene heater for the winter.

I guarantee you will not regret getting the house. It is a fabulous feeling to have a positive net worth, (hey! I’m kinda like Bill Gates!) Just keep that auto wish list updated.

Ooh! good idea!!

In high school, we used to tinker with a Olds 442 455 and a NB miata but I’d probably lean towards a late 90’s, early 2000’s BMW to tinker with as it’d be something different.

ohhhh I see, didn’t know your car was crashed!

You could buy a really good car for $5000

Nothing mechanically or structurally was damaged, it just looks terrible lol. After all the parts and the beer to share with my father-in-law, I’ll be out maybe $600 to completely repair the Tuscon. I’ll put the $5000 toward the down payment on the house lol

Oh yeah, used to do that stuff all the time back in high school. My friend’s grandfather had a big garage and a bunch of old cars he was never going to get to so we’d work on them and get them working again. Something I hope my daughter enjoys in the future lol

I think z3s are pretty cheap right now along with e36s. BMW isn’t the way to go to keep it cheap thought. Ask me how I know.

Good luck with all the life things thought. Remember that cars will always be around (for the forseeable future anyway) so you can always wait and get back in later.

Buying a car in 2017 means picking up a FoRS just as it nears end of factory warranty. Fret not brother, there is hope yet.

Where I’m from, 650k buys you a house, a project house, 400+ acres, like a mile of river frontage, and an island. I couldn’t imagine spending that on something without a yard.

I got a higher paying job so I could keep the S2000 ... but my wife decided that meant we could get a nicer house instead.

Kinja'd!!!

Nah - get the house. Better. Who knows, maybe you’ll have to learn a couple of Jedi tricks to keep the current wheels turning because it’s “getting old”. Then you can impress your friends at parties - in your *house*.

If you can swing a hammer, buy something that needs a little work and fix it up. We bought our house in the lowest of the market, added about $60k to it and its value went up $150k between my work and general increase of the market. Purchased for $235k and we’ve had a couple realtors look at it and we can put it on the market for $385k
