...But now I see that was only because I wasn’t forced to use it. Damn does this thing ever suck balls.

Yeah, its mind blowingly bad. I cannot stand it.

It's OK. IF you have a proper touch device.

Download “start menu 8”. You can customize the start button so that it functions like win 7. It also allows you to switch off all of the windows 8 “hot corner/side” menus, boot straight to the desktop etc...

I’ve tried it time and time again, and I have figured out how to use it, but I still hate it.

Until you use it on a touchscreen device and experience one of the best touch interfaces ever. Yes I am serious. It kicks ass on devices like the Surface Pro’s thanks to all the swiping action and basically having everything within thumb reach even on big tablets.
But yeah, on anything without a touch screen it is ‘less than ideal’ at most.

I’d recommend Classic Shell over Start Menu 8. Classic Shell does all the work for you and looks/works exactly like a Start Menu from Windows 7 or (for whatever reason) Windows Vista and also Windows 95.
Just, make sure you uninstall it before upgrading to Windows 10. Classic Shell no likey Windows 10.

I think 8.1 boots directly to the desktop. mine does...

I had a laptop for two years which I only used maybe three dozen times as I hated Win8. Installed 8.1 and was slightly better and I mean slightly but since installing Win10, I’ve used my computer everyday (also because one of the others finally gave up the ghost after eight years, she stuck in there the old gal) and it feels more like Win7 and useable.

I had forgotten about classic shell. I work in an enterprise environment for the most part, so we decided to skip 8 and 8.1. I use win 10 for the tech savy, and I leave all of the dinosaurs on 7.

When I got my PC it came with 8.1 and it had a classic start menu built-in (although it seemed like it was an aftermarket add-on or something). In any case, it did the trick, and I almost never use the start menu anyways - I’d prefer to hit the Windows key and type in what I was looking for.
The free upgrade to 10 was excellent - in fact a couple of programs that didn't work on 8.1 started working on 10 for some reason.

That’s absolutely true, I wen back to 8.1 after a month on 10 because of the touchscreen.

8.1 it’s great ONLY if you have a touchscreen, so great I had to go back from 10.

Whenever I am forced to use a Windows 8 PC, I click the start menu and the next 5 minutes staring blankly as I try to figure out how to find anything.
