Welcome to “What does Oppo think of this...” A series where I give you a car, and you tell me your honest opinion.
So, what does Oppo think of this...
2006 !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ?
The A3 is the bigger brother of yesterday’s A3, and is powered by a 3.1L twenty-four valve V6 producing 255 hp @ 6500 RPM, and 243 lb-ft of torque @ 3250 RPM. The V6 is hooked up to a 6-speed manual and an AWD drivetrain. Supposedly the AWD and V6 combo will take you to highway speeds in a moderate 6.8 seconds.
So Oppo, what do you think of this Audi A4?

I think that I’d never own an Audi.

I like em but not with that engine. I’d rather go 2l Turbo for better economy or full fat V8 ala S4/RS4 for performance.

I like it. Looks like a fun little wagon for all seasons.

What’s your rationale? Just curious...
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:07 |

Exactly. Where I live AWD is almost a must for winters

Not a fan of AWD, but at least a little better than FWD. Would get as a family car, but seeing as I don't have a family, pass.

that’s a sweet wagon. on one hand its unreliable cuz audi but on the other hand its so cheap and you get a lot of car for that money. it depresses me that its slower than my current car but maybe that’s changeable

Fun little wagon with very nice wheels!

My grandpa has owned Audi’s his entire life, and he’s never had a mechanical issue. But I’m 100% sure that he doesn’t push his cars as hard as I do.
And never forget, the only limit to speed is your bravery, ingenuity, and budget.

I do love the stock rims on here.

I look at an Audi and I’m just like :-|

Just the whole “German garrrrr performance raaahhh” type of thing?

I don’t want the repair bill when it breaks, but they don’t break that often and what breaks is pretty well known. So not bad. We have an ‘08 Passat Wagon, and I have no major concerns after 110K and standard maintenance. My understanding is the V6 has a hellacious timing chain job, but that’s a one-time deal.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:23 |

Unreliable, but only for some people. Most of them are pretty damn solid cars.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:24 |
|
I’ve heard the same...as far as I know most A4s are fairly reliable
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:28 |
|
Maybe it’s just the V8 that has the timing chain job from hell:

I hadn’t come across that article before. Good to know. I am in love with German wagons, so I’m sure this will come in handy.

Here’s my wife’s DD - the ‘08 Passat Wagon. Ours is FWD, the only way you could get it with a stick. The 2.0 Turbo is plenty of motor, lots of fun to drive and still beats 30 MPG highway. Not bad at all for a car this big.
If you can find one in good shape I highly recommend it. It’s been a great car for us.
No AWD, but with winter tires it doesn’t need it. It’s a tank in the snow, no problems at all even driving to the ski mountains in a blizzard.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:39 |
|
So you’re happy with the 2.0 Turbo? The Passat is basically the lower trim A3, so they are very comparable.

I’m gunna call BS on that 0-60. I think my WRX can do it in 6.5 and had more power and probably less weight. I’d still take it tho. The S would be preferable.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:44 |

Those aren’t stock for an A4. They likely came off an S4. they’re made by BBS, CH is the model
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:46 |

Passat is more akin to the A4, they share the same chassis. The A3 is more like a Golf.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:47 |
|
Sorry, my bad. I meant to type A4. The A3 I posted yesterday is basically a glorified Golf.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:47 |

Good to know. They just seem to fit!
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:48 |

The B6 S4 has the timing job from hell. The chain is on the back of the motor so it has to be pulled to service. The B7s have a similar chain but it is at the front so no pull required. PARTS for both can run up to $3k for the full set of chains.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:49 |
|
Nope, just don’t like Audis there is no reasoning.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:50 |
|
The V6s are generally more reliable than the I4 turbos but not as much fun. FWIW my old 1.8t A4 was rock solid with normal maintenance.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:51 |
|
Agreed on the 0-60. But when you get into the S4 area, you have the timing chain from hell to deal with.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 12:52 |

Ah well, I’m the same with Corvettes.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 13:12 |

I love the 2.0T. Great fun. The Passat is the “B6” body style, I think much bigger than the A3.
![]() 09/29/2015 at 14:40 |

The A3 is the bigger brother of yesterday’s A3
A4?
I like it, particularly those wheels, but I’d rather have a nice, low emission TDI....
![]() 09/29/2015 at 15:38 |
|
I’d agree with liking the 2.0T. My B6 Wagon has close to 150k on it. I have only replaced the Cam follower since I have had it, so not bad so far. Peppy little motor for sure, I get more like 25-29mpg but I also have an auto

please don’t buy an Audi
i beg you.
they’re not a very well engineered vehicle , seriously!
