It’s Sunday, and I need to go to bed early due to a [much] earlier work schedule.

What car - under $1500 - would be ideal for a first-time car flipper? You don’t need to support it with ads necessarily, but name a car easily findable under $1500, that could be sellable at a profit for less than an additional $500 for parts (so maximum $2K budget) and a few weekends’ work.

I’d pick a Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan/Mazda6/Lincoln MKZ/Zephyr or Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner/Mazda Tribute. Why? Because they’re not crazy to work on, are found for relatively cheap needing a good cleaning and tune-up, parts are plentiful, and there’s room for mild upgrades Wheeler Dealers style, if wanted. It wouldn’t have to turn a huge profit, but enough to

get “bitten by the bug” and afford the next project.

When in doubt, choose Toyota.

I suspect it has more to do with how the previous owner (mis)treated the car, than what kind of car it is...

There are exceptions, though. I don’t think I would pick an Audi.

On second thought, forget all that. It’s a crapshoot anyway.

I would say a civic or alike Japanese econobox because the mark is good enough for one to turn a profit, take a riced one and turn it back to stock, IMHO

I don’t think you would find a Fusion/6 or Escape/Tribute in that price range, they are just too new. You really need to be thinking something 90s with decently low enough miles but in pretty poor looking condition. Maybe a bad head gasket, minor (repairable) rust/paint issues, or just a litany of small problems. Either way, make sure it has a clean title (salvage titles are no fun) and give it a good full detail (wash, clay, compound/polish, and wax). Good options would be Civic, Corolla, Miata, ford ranger, crown vic, fox body mustang, probably others too.

I bought my 2003 Mazda 6 S V6 with 96k miles in April for $1700, and looking at buying a 2005 Mazda 6 S V6 with 125k miles for $650, and it just needs coils, plugs, and a thorough detailing.

Fusions go for even less because more were made. I also have access to a good stream of used cars. They’d be pricier private-party.
