I drive a stock 91 YJ and my friend Nathan’s is a 2007 Commander on a 2” lift. Both performed pretty well, although I got hung up a couple of times thanks to no lockers, loose gravel/sand, and a tight trail. Great day though, and the aspens are gorgeous right now.

Thanks! We’re in Denver, and this was about an hour northwest of us. It’s a great time of year here!

It was my first time out on the trail, and I had a blast, despite getting a little stuck. You really have to think your way out of those, as opposed to using brute force sometimes. I realized 2nd in 4 Low a MUCH better option than 1st, because 1st just wanted to dig in. Too much torque, and was throwing pretty big rocks (30lbs or so) out from under the Jeep. 2nd got me out with a little less drama!

I’m guessing you followed him on the trails?

I should also note the good photos aren’t mine. They’re my buddy Nathan’s . I stuck to shooting panos most of the day because I wanted to see everything.

I did. It ended up being very loose up top. Nothing the YJ couldn’t handle, but I found myself really digging a couple of times because the LSD didn’t know what to do. Good learning experience. I know I’d have managed on my own, but it was nice to have someone else out there with you to share the moment and help out in a pinch.

Black Diamond? Fancy. I love the color, too.

That’s still way too expensive for me, but a great deal!

It was a stretch for us, but it should last a while and I didn’t have anything like it.

Hey man, give me some details on that Commander, how’d it do out there? We have an 08 Commander with a 2” lift we just put on this summer. Really changes the entire look of those trucks, massive impact.

The truck looks fantastic with that lift. I’ve only driven it on the street, but loved it.
He didn’t have a single moment of drama on the trail. What we did wasn’t technical, based on what I read and see other guys in Jeeps doing, but it was loosely packed and sandy enough to give me a couple of issues in the Wrangler. It was also really bumpy, but he just kept radioing me laughing because he could see me bouncing all over the place in the YJ. I think his Commander has the QuadraTrac II system, and it didn’t seem to struggle at all, so you should be fine if you hit any trails. Enjoy!

I let him blaze most of the trails since it was my first time out, and he got through a LOT easier than I did. Good time either way though.

We have the V6 and Quadra Trac I, does he have a V8? That guarantees at least QT-II.
I think we’d probably sitll make it through, good tires on it plus the clearance.

Optional V-6, which came with QTII. I have no doubt that if my YJ without lockers can make it, your MUCH more advanced Commander will be fine. Just be smart, and post pictures wherever your adventures take you!

Well, I know a big part of all of it is being smart about driving.
I love how it towers over my Milan haha.
Here’s the pics from lifting it:
