So i was chatting with my dad... and he dropped a bit of a bomb on me.
“Pete...I’m starting to not like that triumph daytona so much....”
oh poop
me: so then what else is there? I’m UPGRADING the SV. not down grading. all of the japanese 600s dont have ABS aside from one or two fo them, and they are all STUPID to insure. And I dont want a naked. So what do you think I should do? and NO, ducati isnt an option. I’m not paying 2600 every 12k km”
“Why not a BMW?”
“erm. the only BMW made tht I like is the S1000RR. you know I dont like yours.” [F800R]
dad: okay...why not?
me: :O
this has set into motion a dastardly series of plans and events....

Hey hon, the word “jap” is not a very good word. Might want to change it to “Japanese.”
![]() 09/21/2015 at 17:21 |
|
as is the word retard and retarded, but we still use it to decribe timing.
not to mention everyone in the bike world uses it. I stand by my statement.
![]() 09/21/2015 at 17:27 |

Using the words “retard” and “retarded” to refer to legitimate things like fire suppression or engine timing is not offensive. Using those words to describe people or things, as in saying “you’re a retard,” however, IS offensive. The term “Jap” is a slur used against the Japanese. Whether or not ignorant members of the bike culture use it does not negate that fact nor make it acceptable.
You can stand by your statement as much as you like, my friend, but as your friend , I am gently trying to tell you it is in poor form.
Remember the conversation about racial slurs we were having yesterday? Here’s a practical application of that very conversation, hon.

Words don’t have negative meanings unless we give them negative meanings. You’re giving the word ‘Jap’ negative meaning, not Peter.
![]() 09/21/2015 at 17:39 |

I’m not assigning the word a negative connotation, it already HAS one. It’s a racial slur. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jap
And Oppo has a policy against racism and the use of slurs.
Replace the word “Jap” with the “N-word” and see if your argument still holds water. Or am I just assigning an unnecessary negative connotation to that word, too?

I very confusedly had to explain to my dad a few years ago why it wasn’t okay to refer to people as “chinamen.”
Also, this is just an observation, but I think people find “hon” to be fairly condescending outside of certain contexts. It’s great for those situations where you /want/ to be a little condescending, but for others it can put people on a bit of a hostile footing right away. Or maybe it’s just me. Not trying to be the tone police or anything, just offering my perspective on it.

the N word was flat out an insult.
jap is short of japanese. no negative meaning there.

not the case here. me and Xy have a bit of history with this stuff :D. (both good and bad)

Ah, that makes a bit more sense.
Again, I may be totally out in left field and it bothers literally nobody else.

Pete and I are pretty good friends. He knows I use “hon” as a term of endearment, even when we have disagreements. But by the same token, I’ll always call him out on his bullshit. He’ll call me out on mine, too. :)

Those are good friends to have. I have a very close friend who does that for me. It’s gotten to the point that if she says “No, you’re wrong about this.” I just accept that I’m wrong because I know from experience she’d convince me eventually anyway.
![]() 09/21/2015 at 17:57 |

Pete, it’s a racial slur. Plain and simple. Read the link I posted to someone else. Whether or not you meant it as just an abbreviation doesn’t mean it’s not a slur.
People in the American South used the N word all the time because it was simply part of their culture. It wasn't always meant as a slur, but it was. This is the same thing.

I’d like to point out that “Jap motors” is a very valid, historical topic within motorcycle circles... ;^)

The fact that you didn’t spell out the N-word speaks volumes on the difference between Jap and the N-word.

Saying “yeah, that haircut looks great on you!” is orders of magnitude different than “yeah, our diesel emissions are awesome!” But they’re both lies. The severity of the lie doesn’t change the fact that it’s a lie. Same thing with racial slurs.

I think it really depends on a variety of things, but it’s understood to be a slur here in the US, dating back to WWII. The wikipedia link above explains it all better than I ever could.
In other regions, it does not carry quite the same negative meaning, but I’d prefer not to let this break down into a discussion about racial epithet jurisdiction. For our purposes, I’d prefer it not be used.
As Oppo has a very large US readership and it’s already been brought up as something that many find offensive, I’ve edited that out of the original post (changed to Japanese).
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Buy a Duc and do the work yourself. Pussy. Either that or you gotta pay to play no matter what brand you get.
Plus the big service intervals on the more recent Ducs are much longer than 12k km.

What would have been gained by spelling it out? This is a pedantic argument, and the issue is that a slur was used in the OP, without any ill will, and which has since been corrected.

I’m not gonna be baited into listing the couple of dozen most offensive words I know. However, that’s a fairly ridiculous argument to make. Let’s take the term “Illegal Alien” and use that as a stand in (it’s topical and also, like the others, is offensive, regardless of whether you’ll find it in a newspaper or magazine). The people who this term refers to, find it offensive, as do their family, respective nation(s), and those who stand up for them in their absence.
Flower is not giving the word a negative meaning. By living in an English speaking country and/or participating in an English speaking community which is using the language in a historical context (protip, all languages have historical contexts) , the word has negative connotations. Period. Are words just words? Yep. And they have started fucking wars . Words have power.
The term “Jap” like the term “kike” and many others which were popularized around WWII, are horribly offensive, demeaning and when just bandied about as if they are common words, only serves to perpetuate their usage and to make the world an ever so slightly worse place to live.

the BMWs dont have the crazy intervals.
not to mention, ducatis (i find) are really uncomfortable and frankly, annoying in anything other then a track like setting. and seeing as I will be doing a lot of commuting on mine, no thanks.
that said...I’m starting to warm uip to a 899..

I’ll just leave this at:
Flower has a very valid point.
You can see
my response
to Sam if you want.
The oppo handbook is pretty dang clear about racism, both explicit or implied, is not tolerated here.
I think you’re possibly arguing for the sake of arguing (or maybe because you’ve always used it that way, and don’t see the harm), and talking this out, and having a debate is fine, as is seeking out understanding of something which you are unaware or uncertain of. But the term is offensive. Period.

Comfort and tolerance is all about the rider. Unless you are commuting over an hour each way, comfort shouldn’t be an issue. I’ve ridden an 848 on the street and didn’t think it lived up to its horrendously bad comfort reputation.

Missed the part about the 899 the first time. I’m seriously considering buying a white 899 next fall.

And “pussy” is a gendered insult. So much win in this post.

I have a politically incorrect potty mouth and I know it. I’m not going to try and defend the things I say (type.)

My commute isbt so mich long as it is tedious. Lots of traffic and stop and go. The over heating and heavy clutch of ducks would be really annoying.
Again, ill havr to test ride it before final verdict.
![]() 09/21/2015 at 19:10 |

Used it before and used it here with no one jumping (sorry, informing me) of the mistake. Always been used as short hand for Japanese.
![]() 09/21/2015 at 19:21 |

New ducks are not like the old ducks. The 899 is water cooled (opposed to the 2v air cooled bikes) and has a wet clutch (as opposed to the heavier feeling dry clutch in the 2v bikes) that is no harder to pull than any other bike with a hydraulic clutch. I.e. CBR1000rr, busa, zx14, etc. Just make sure you give the 899 a shot and do a test ride first.
EDIT: Also wanted to say that I’m with you. In the Motorcycle industry (even the professionals), jap is used as an abbreviation for Japanese and is in no way used to indicate white people’s racial superiority. If you use th term Jap in the way you used it in the article, personally, i won’t be offended.
![]() 09/21/2015 at 19:23 |

Like i said. It is on my short list to test ride. Im starting to like the looks of them (not the nose...but the rest looks good)

I know. I AM in the industry. I teach riding in Ontario. this, frankly, i find stupid. But at the end of the day, not my site, not my rules

I edited my response to include my opinion on your use of the J word sir.
![]() 09/21/2015 at 21:14 |

Yes it has always been shorthand for Japanese, but again as Gamecat explained in his comment, it has highly negative connotations.
You can use it if you wish but if you keep it up here on Oppo, just know that we won’t stand it for it
Thanks

That sucks both are ridiculously good looking bikes and both sound amazing.
![]() 09/22/2015 at 07:11 |

That’s not a good way be here on Oppo. If you continue that way, we’ll have to take action against your account. Anyway, I’m not seeing any actual ill intent in your original comment
Here’s the Oppo handbook if you want to peruse it and apply it to your comportment here on Oppo.
