I’ve had fun this last year buying cars I thought were neat, driving them for a while, and selling them to find something else unique. Today I was driving and realized that despite how completely and obviously different they are, they all have one thing in common. Something that is different than probably at least 90% of cars.
Hint: think of what they all don’t have, but most cars do. Hope that doesn’t make it too easy.
And already a winner! Tareim guessed it with no cupholders!
06 Lotus Elise
86 Euro 420 SEC, cloth seats (they did not sell 420 SECs in the states)
Classic Mini (sorry for picture quality, but won’t affect guesses)
And my current daily driver, 02 Dodge Viper GTS.

They all have 4 wheels!
Serious Guess: No Power steering?

Airbags?

A pipe holder?
I get being anti-smoking, but there’s no reason to make that a defining reason for your car purchases...

oh sure that’s true, but maybe 10% of cars dont either. that’s too easy, but not maybe technically correct (not what I was thinking of)

Nope, the MB and Viper have power steering.

ABS I assume.
My second guess would be airbags but I hope for your sake that Viper has at least 1.
Other possibilities could be a clean title, aux jack/bluetooth, or an owner that isn’t crazy.

You’d be right but Euro models has traction control called accelerated slip regulation (US got it in the 90’s). That’s why I made sure to mention Euro

Nope. All but Mini had airbags
![]() 09/21/2015 at 13:45 |

ABS? That’s my best guess.

Nope, the Viper can hardly be called having AC though. The Lotus and the MB had ice cold AC (which was an anomaly for Elise’s)

Aircon? cupholders?

I had the Mini until last week, so it was the sunny weather DD. Sold the Mini and not getting a new car anytime soon because of a pending move to who knows where (thanks Army)

AC 3 had.
But DING DING to cupholders! Hadn’t even thought of it until today when I took my water bottle with me and realized, damn, I never have cupholders

None of those are in any way practical.

Me, in the driver’s seat.

The MB was plenty practical. Giant trunk and the $5500 it cost me off craigslist helped pay for the 15 mpg I got.
The Mini was also incredibly practical for commuting. Once fit 3 people and 2 border collies in it. Viper and Elise, well that’s a hard argument for practicality at all. The Elise at least got a respectable 25-30 mpg

who says a daily must be practical? for me if your driving it daily it must be fun

Oh forgot about the Mini, and I’m a tad jealous :)

ABS all but the Mini had (including the Viper which got them in 2001, thank God, big part of why I didn’t get an older one)
All clean titles, Aux jack on all of them but the MB when I bought them (although aftermarket). I have made money on all of them so I can’t be that crazy...at least that’s why my wife keeps letting me get whatever I want.

That is gorgeous. Those old Mercs look so stately compared to the overwrought luxury cars of today.

Not judging, just trying to make a guess. I agree entirely which is why I still have my 2002 SVT Focus with 110k miles and just paid $600 for a timing assembly service. True, it’s a hatch, so there is the ability to haul way more than you think you can, but it is very fun and that is the most imprtant factor.

It wasn’t a very good guess, but that’s all I could think of.

Sorry I took it as a comment on them rather than an Answer to the question due to the MB looking like a very practical choice

Well, it was a comment on the cars themselves, but really it was meant to be sarcastic. And while the MB does have some pratical attributes, I would still say it isn’t a terribly good DD as it will most certainly spend considerable time and expense at the local dealer/foreign car mechanics.

unfortunately, no. I am just of driving age for under a year, and have yet to even purchase my own car, so I am currently driving the family’s 2008 Chevy Malibu LTZ. I guess that “Malibu Hoonmobile” Just didn’t have the same ring to it.

I had a 200HP V6 Camaro at 16 and wrecked it twice despite it not being that fast. My unborn son will not be getting a sports car of any type.

I convinced my parents to allow me to buy a 2006 Audi A4 Avant, when I have enough saved that is. So far I haven’t had any vehicular mishaps, but I’m still young :/

Something that is different than probably at least 90% of cars.
This is definitely not true. Maybe new cars, maybe. I’d wager no Nissan released before ‘95 has ever had cup holders. My ‘84 300ZX had power windows and mirrors, cruise control, and optional power seats. But there was no cupholder. Same with the Z32, my N13 Pulsar, SW20 MR2. They were an option on my girlfriend’s 2000 Mitsubishi Lancer, only the fancy ones got them.
It’s weird some of the newer cars that don’t have them, even when there are so many other features.

Good thing I wrote probably, implying that it was merely my guess. Glad you came here two days after the post to point out what you view is a mistake.
