The latest RX is the first time I have noticed the LFA’s exterior design cues working in the brand. People mentioned the LFA influencing Lexus design but I never saw it past the interiors. However, in the case of the RX, not only are unmistakable cues ptesent, but the exterior also pushes the design forward so that you can imagine what an updated LFA would look like.

LFA still looks better though.

Yeah, the body colored mirror surrounds really tip the scale in its favor.

Used to think that the NSX II could have been something like the LFA.

Eh, I wish carmakers would dare creating these kinds of cars more frequently ... see, for example, the turbine-powered Jaguar that didn’t get made. :/

*drool* (Jen not the RX). I do need to admit that I think the RX is currently the best expression of the Lexus design cues. The RC compromises after the front grill. I would consider it!

I’ll admit it throws me off since Lambo always puts out small batches of $3 million cars. Seems like if you price the vehicle under a million it doesn’t sale as well. Look at the amount of time it took the 918 to sell out compared to P1 or LaF, or the Juke Nismo RS, or LFA. I think every automaker needs to do a One-77 style of car and sell, just to show what they are capable of. It would be like the new way of doing a concept car, except with concept engineering.

It amazes me how loyal buyers of this:

Will be able to swallow the new design.

Massive front overhang.

It took me until reading the article on the Bond cars to realize that Aston Martin has shit the bed with the ub3r DB. I can appreciate the One-77, but the DB10 they came up with just doesn’t do much for me, at least when it comes to purely aesthetic appeal up front.

The Jaguar outclasses it by quite margin, and it looks real. The other car looks like a kid’s idea, e.g. a car that can also fly and swim and is also a sorcerer turtle.

I think it also influenced the FRS

It’s to match the wheel diameter! Get the 20 inch wheels and they add the front spoiler to give you 20 inches of overhang. The youths love hanging out! Works for the ILX.

I often wonder if part of Lexus’s strategy to get new buyers is to kind of alienate the old ones. I don’t think they worry too much about the loyalists; they desperately want younger people buying their cars.

I think that RX is hideous, and here’s why: short wheelbase with long front overhangs. It’s a trend that has become common lately, and I hate it.

To wit:

Jeep Cherokee

Kinja'd!!!

I actually don’t mind the creepy front end too much, but there’s just so much car in front of the front wheels.

Dodge Dart

Kinja'd!!!

Pretty car, but that nose...

Chevrolet Cruze

Kinja'd!!!

Subaru Forester

Kinja'd!!!

I kinda give Subaru a pass here because the long nose is functionally necessary due to the engine/tranny layout which is specific to their brand. Still looks ugly, IMO.

I understand its just an inherent necessity for the FWD drivetrain, but I still hate it.

ILX is also FWD

So Lexus’ strategy is disgust old people to the point of kicking them off the brand?

Nice!

I disagree. From the front backwards:

- LFA doesn’t have the predator grill, RX does

- Front bumpers aren’t similar at all

- Headlights are a completely different shape

- LFA has a flat, vented bonnet. RX has a bulgy one that digs into the fender

- LFA has a perfectly round wheel arch with a small flat section following it around. RX has an ugly angular one with a bigger, angular flat section

- Front quarter windows are sort of similar, except the RX has a design flaw where the door interfered that they plugged with black plastic

-LFA has smooth, featureless doors except for the section leading into the huge vent. RX has ugly, angular, pointless contours in doors that in no way resemble those on the LFA.

- LFA has body colored strip on pillar. RX has entirely black pillar.

- LFA has hidden door handles. RX doesn’t on either door.

- LFA has two large vents, the top one weirdly styled like a wave. RX has an ugly rising hipline that’s barely similar if at all.

- Rear wheel arches are the same as the front ones - not similar at all

- LFA has sloping roof, RX doesn’t. Has an ugly body-colored thing surrounded by masses of black plastic? Might be trying to emulate the LFA, more likely pretending it’s a coupe when it’s obviously not.

- LFA has hidden spoiler, RX has roof-mounted wing

- RX has bulging rear window, LFA doesn’t

- Exhausts are completely different

- Rear lights are completely different

- Rear bumpers are completely different

I’m sorry. I’d love to believe the LFA’s unique styling has trickled down to normal cars, that there’s a way to justify the hideous Lexii of the current day. But I really don’t see it.
