Kinja'd!!!

I feel like this is a picture I’ve been posted before....This time. I’m pretty sure the 1st(or 1-6th owner) over torqued and loctited the drain plug bolts to beyond hell.

Kinja'd!!!

Both the torch and long torque wrench failed.

Kinja'd!!!

Gonna need a pneumatic wrench or something ingenious, because a drill is the worst solution or compromise.

Why would someone loctite a drain plug?!
It’s MEANT TO BE REMOVED.

And in my experience, it’s better to add more heat than you think you need. Like, just, roast that sucker til it almost glows.

Roasted that SOB for 5 minutes straight. TWICE!!Still nothing.

With diligence and tools I am sure you’ll get it.

Use a breaker bar. Something’s gotta give.

Couldn’t hurt to soak it in penetrant; the best I’ve used is a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone.

Used a 1/4 can of pb blaster on both bolts. Would purple power be a suitable substitute for ATF?

Also where can I get a breaker bar?

There’s a Harbor Freight on John R just south of 14 Mile, right next to the Toys R Us.

I don’t think Purple Power is what you want.

I’d lend you mine, but I’m about an hour away from you, and you might as well add a breaker bar to your toolbox anyway. HF, Home Depot, Lowes... auto parts stores should have ‘em, too.

The picture is a test conducted a few years back on different penetrating oils; zoom in to read it. The homebrew stuff kicks ass.

So I need something stronger than pb blaster then. Time to buy more tools. I swear I’ve spent more money on tools than parts for this car! :p

I’m guessing the transaxle casing is aluminum? That’s probably why it’s giving you so much grief. Make sure you put anti-seize on the new plugs before installing them.

I’ve never worked on a Porsche, so this is just a shot in the dark: Looking at the new plugs, are they by any chance a left-hand thread?

Is this on the transaxle? Had the same problem on my Milano when I gave it a refresh, the transaxle drain plug might as well have been welded to the case.

You just need some leverage. Got a pipe laying around? If your ratchet is small enough you may be able use your jack handle.

Go to home depot and get some blck pipe like they use for natural gas. Bring your wrench to make sure it’ll fit over it. Good luck

Aluminium case yes. And they're right hand threaded. So I have to force this thing in a counter clockwise movement.

Your best bet is to soak it in penetrant- overnight, if you can afford to wait. If heat isn’t helping, it’s going to be all about torque. Hopefully the threads loosen before something else breaks, like your wrench or hex bit.

I need it for tomorrow morning and all day so it really can't wait any longer than it has. I can save this job again for another day but I really don't want to again. I don't care if the tools break, the transaxle breaking would be the worst case scenario.

Driving it around and getting it up to temperature might help.

You, know I just had a thought: When you put the torch to it, you are heating the case, right? You want to expand the hole, not the plug...

I’m thinking it’s not PO-issues, then, unless you find specific evidence of loctite or something when you pull the bolt out. There may be something about transaxles that causes it; someone mentioned the aluminum casing maybe being a problem, which seems plausible. Maybe if you heat the casing instead of the bolt the aluminum should expand more quickly than the steel bolt.

Impact socket on a breaker bar, 1/2” drive (or 3/4” if it’s available but that’s uncommon), 2lb hammer on end of breaker bar. You can also use a jack to lift the end of the breaker bar - I once lifted my crown vic off the jackstands through a 16” breaker bar through a caliper bracket bolt with the latter method.

High powered impact wrench (air or electric) might vibrate it loose.

None. Gonna need more power and torque. Or a miracle to remove the bolt without rounding it off any more than it currently is. Might have to take it to a shop to see if they can at least loosen the bolts for me.

While impacts are nice, the breaker bar can enable you to apply the same levels of torque (even more if accompanied by a cheater pipe). But it’s hard to get much leverage when you’re lying underneath the car. The best you can do in that situation is brace your feet against something under the car, preferably part of the frame, and be careful not to throw out your back.

When you’ve got that much oomph going into it, something’s going to give. You might round the hex, you might break your tool, or maybe, hopefully, the plug will break loose. Strategic use of heat and penetrating oil can help tip the scales in your favor.

If the hex gets rounded and you can’t use a tool on it anymore, a bolt can be welded onto the plug. This provides a fresh point to wrench from.
