This has been pooling around in my mind, make a rally-inspired car for the winter, with rally-style fog lights, mudflaps, maybe a lift, good tires to slide around in, and still be reliable for a daily commute.
Ideally, I’d get a Geo Metro for the lulz, and for the buzzy 3-pot, but then I get news that a friend of a friend is selling a EG Civic (non VTEC) hatch for $400. I may not get a part discount from working at a Chevy dealer, but parts are still dirt cheap, I could also go the Aveo route, and get a discount. So what are your thoughts, Oppo?

For fun get a truck like a Ranger. It will slide around a lot and will have the 4WD to get you unstuck. Or a WRX

Suzuki SX4, I had a 2010 awd 6 speed manual. Goes everywhere and easy to hoon in the snow. I used to hit the gas just a bit harder to loose traction a many turns. Prices went down, so could be a cheap option. I found that the SX4 is built solid. 2 inch lift kits available, I was planning to lift mine, only installed my oversized tires, then crashed it last February.
It was a fun little car, and I still miss mine.

1. Find cheap mechanically sound fox body
2. Apply lift kit and loud exhast with steelies and snow tires
3. Hoon in snow
4. Profit

Haven’t driven one, but they are quite solid from what I heard, surprisingly common.

if it was just up to me I would of bought a 2013 with 15000k that I found after the accident, but since my insurance payed out what I payed for it new, I bought a pathfinder, cause it seats 7. We have 2 girls and my boy is coming in about 4-5 weeks.

I’m tempted to put a mild lift on my Fiero for this exact purpose.
And maybe because I think a lifted Fiero will make people go, “What!?”

that would be awesomely hilariously stupidly awesome.

Right? I’ve been contemplating it for a while. Thinking:
1-2” lift for the ground clearance
Oversized snow/all-terrain tires on 13” steelies
Front-mounted light bar
Mud flaps
Also maybe an oversized, M90-inspired camo paint job to round out the look.

I support and also desire to do this with my Fiero that I will now try to seek out on Craigslist

I had to look up the SX4 on my local CL, but only found one that looked like Optimus Prime chewed on it.

it’s a 2009, so if it’s an auto is a 4 speed auto, if manual a 5 speed. It also has the non VVT engine. in 2010 engine changed to 150hp vvt, 6 speed manual and the auto became a cvt.
That’s why I bought my SX4 in 2010, awd 6 speed manual...
then in 2014 went and put oversized tires on it and the 6th speed basically became useless. crashed it in early 2015. total loss for the insurance since my rear drive train was what impacted the immovable object.
total loss since new pieces and labor exceeded value of the car.
