Kinja'd!!!

Is there any modern-ish automatic car that doesn’t use PRNDL, but instead the manufacturer’s language?

I don’t think so. Except maybe hybrids which sometimes have a brake mode on the shifter for regenerative braking b

I also think it should be changed to PRNDM, since most cars have a manual mode and not many have “low” anymore.

while googling I found this...

Kinja'd!!!

People actually mod their Prius shifters to replace the shifter with these silly looking carbon fiber buttons.

If you're talking about how lettering, probably not. If you're talking about the basic system, see your local Mercedes dealer.

No. PRNDL is the SAE international standard.

No, but as America is the biggest single market to gobble up automatics, it’s fitting.

The SAE are a US based organisation and aren’t in a position to impose global standards on anybody.

Well, no, but they don’t have to impose anything. They publish reports which global manufacturers usually look at and say “hey, this is a good idea”.

Yes, same as how many manufacturers followed DIN standards (net power, radio sizes, paper sizes...) before ISO ones were invented.

One of my parents’ old Citroëns (definitely their BX, maybe their Xantia as well), used PRNA321.

For extra confusion, the semi-automatic BVH transmission that they used on the DS had the starter activated with the gear lever; the start position was labelled ‘D’!

Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4:

Kinja'd!!!

R: Reculer (Reverse), N: Neutre (Neutral), A: Automatique, M: Manuelle

Which is weird ‘cause other Peugeot products (non HYbrid4) use the regular PRND one (or RPND sometimes).

But couldn’t they also be R: Reverse, N: Neutral, A: Automatic and M: Manual?

How do you know they mean that in french?
