Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 12

I’m sure we’ve all seen this, but I’ve come up with a theory.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I saw this on R&T’s FB page, and my initial reaction was that it would be a fantastic name for their show. Perfectly captures their humor and the relationship between the hosts.

I started reading the comments, and found that pretty much everyone agreed on that point. However, a lot of people were disappointed in what appears to be the name for a new Stig character; Speedbird. Yet nobody seemed to draw the same conclusion from this as I did. Let’s break this compound word back into its two original parts.

Speed- Well, the reasoning behind this one is obvious. POOOWWWEEEERRRR!

Bird- A creature belonging to the scientific class Aves. Hmm... that doesn’t make too much sense. Maybe a feather laden track suit?... Nah. Oooorrr, a British colloquialism for a young, and generally attractive, girl.

Could the new Stig be a woman? In my opinion, the consideration of the name “Speedbird” would seem to hint at this. It would bring what some might consider much needed diversity to the show, and promote the automotive community’s efforts to be more encouraging of female participation and involvement. It would make a lot of sense.

Furthermore, according to Wikipedia;

The name Stig derives from Wilman and Clarkson’s time at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , where new boys had always been called “Stig.”

In my opinion, the fact that the name for the Stig derived from a term used for boys seems to lend further evidence to the use of gender identifying terms for the role of Tame Racing Driver.

Of course, this is all speculation on my part.

What do you think?

I mentioned the name rumor to my wife yesterday and that was her initial thought exactly.

I would very much enjoy Sabine doing the driving. Is Jodi Kidd racing-driver level good, or just a hobbyist? I know she and Clarkson get along.

I honestly don’t expect it to be Sabine. I feel like if she were approached she’d decline because she’s already got a lot going on, and it just seems like too obvious of an answer. If they’re really trying to promote women in the automotive world, I feel like it would make more sense to put a different female in the spotlight, one who perhaps isn’t as well known in the automotive community.

The thing is, they don’t need the absolute best driver. They just need someone who is pretty damn good and knows the test track better than anyone else.

True.

In any event, I am hugely excited to see what they produce.

The BBC has a vast, yawning chasm to fill and I am not sure they can honestly catch lightning in a bottle twice.

Gear Knobs is fine, whatever.

Speedbird is dumb. The thing about the Stig was that it didn’t make sense and sounded like a random made-up word. WTF is a Stig? Nobody knows, and that fits the persona of the character.

The name Stig derives from Wilman and Clarkson’s time at Repton School , where new boys had always been called “Stig”

I’d say this actually lends further evidence to the theory that the word “bird” in “Speedbird” indicates the possibility of a female driver.

I like it. I think it’s perfectly fitting for those three. And as for the Speedbird, if the it turns out that your idea, and my initial thought as well, is true, then it would definitely bring that show a lot more attention than it’s already getting, in a positive manner to boot!

Speedbird could just be a tip towards their English nationalism. Speedbird is the call sign for British Airways flights and is the name of the bird logo used on BA aircraft.

Certainly another possibility, and a conclusion which some other people on the R&T FB page reached as well.
