I’m speechless. This should rank very highly in a list of ‘most incredible photos of the 21st century so far’. Pluto wasn't even discovered until 1930, and only 85 years later we have this picture of it. No words can express how amazing that is IMO

Those two Pluto photos showed up today on The Atlantic, and I just sat and stared. To launch something into space, have it fly for 9 1/2 years and then work as advertised is simply incredible. I’m still having trouble getting my head around the idea of rivers of nitrogen.

it’s times like this where I still sorta realize astrophysics would be really fucking awesome to do.

Secondary discovery: those Plutovians are pumpin dat bass...

Reminds me of this thought experiment I had with a guy in seventh grade: what would happen if you turned the whole Earth into a subwoofer?

Nothing would happen. Sound needs a medium to travel through. So beyond the giant subwoofer’s atmosphere there’d be no effect. I suspect a subwoofer that size would destroy whatever atmosphere was there anyways.
