Ahh, I see. Why did you remove the tune?

To run in a stock class in autox. There was a newer version without select-a-tune, so I took that off. I suppose I could put the original one back on, but I haven’t. Last I heard they were planning to do another new version and bring back select-a-tune, I was waiting on that, though I haven’t looked in a while.

I also put the car back to stock except for the catback and swaybar. No more blowoff noises for me....though with the windows down the turbo spool is audible.

Gotcha. I don’t Auto-X the Snuze, so I just leave the tune on in performance mode at pretty much all times unless I’m on a long highway trip. I’ve never updated the tune since I got it, for the most part I have no problems with it as it came. And when they got rid of select-a-tune I knew not to mess with it. But I’ve heard there is an updated tune out now that eeks a few more HP out, and is a little smoother, and brings back select-a-tune but I just haven’t taken the time to look into it.

I don't think they've released the newest one. Maybe for the Cruze, but I can't imagine it's much different between the two

I’ve never applied a tune to any of my cars before, but have been thinking of eventually getting one for my Sonic. (1.4, RS)

I am honestly pretty happy with it stock for now (only mod is a catback system for the better sound,) but I think it wont be long before I want to spice up the drive a little bit.

What are your thoughts on the Trifecta tune? Since, I’m a tune-noob, what’s the process of buying, installing, and updating like?

Best money I ever spent on a car.

I fooled around with piggy-back ECUs on a few vehicles before and they were always a PITA. But the Trifecta tune, it’s fantastic. I bought it through a re-seller, ISM (Insane Speed Motorsports) I think, when they were having a Black Friday special or something - got the tune and the laptop USB-OBDII cable all for $300 shipped.

Basically the process is:

Buy the tune and cable.

Download the software from WOT tuning and install on a laptop

Hook it up to the car, and download a copy of the stock tune

Fill some stuff out and e-mail it to Trifecta

A few days later they will e-mail you back a tune file

Fire up the laptop again, hook up the cable, and flash the ECU

Leave the laptop hooked up and get a friend to ride around with you and do some data logging with the WOT software

E-mail logs to Trifecta. They will check to make sure everything is within spec. If not, they tweak the tune file and you repeat the re-flash/data log process until everything is good

It’s a very simple process and doesn’t take too long to do. It makes a HUGE difference in the performance of the car. You go from about 140HP/150TQ to 180HP/200TQ. That’s 28%/33% gains in HP and TQ. Throttle response improves, and if you have an automatic supposedly the shift quality, firmness, speed all improve.

The sort of downside is you always have to run premium fuel, but if you’re not running it already you’re making a mistake. Although the 1.4L Turbo is rated for 87 octane, it has to pull a lot of timing to do so, which makes it sluggish, less powerful, and inefficient. The MPG you gain running premium pretty much evens out the price difference. I ran a few tanks of 87 in my car and the BEST I could do was 34 MPG Highway. When I switched to I started seeing about 37 highway and would average around 35. With the tune and premium I’m averaging 37, and that’s in Washington DC traffic. On the highway I can pull 39, and over 40 in “Eco Mode”. I drove from DC to Michigan International Speedway with 4 adults in the car and a trunk full of luggage on one tank of gas in Eco Mode. That’s over 600 miles.

Awesome. Fantastic reply thank you!

Sounds like buying the tune should be moved up my wish list a couple spots. ;)

i noticed a slight difference using premium so I just run that all the time now. So no problem there. The car is so efficient that even paying premium prices has me spending less on gas than my last car. Averaging about 30mpg now and I drive it pretty hard haha!

Do you have anything else done to your Cruze?

Thanks again for the info! Super helpful. I’m going to look into ISM later tonight :)
