...you’re done car shopping, and you can start looking at parts.
The other day I went shopping at Pick N Pull and got myself a GT40 intake manifold off a Mercury Mountaineer for a few dollars and my time. I did not, however, pull the matching GT40P heads because I wanted regular GT40s.
Some time on Craigslist (meaning I typed in “gt40” in the parts category and it was literally the first ad that came up) yielded me a seller with a set of GT40s for $200. I offered $150, he accepted.
Even better than that, my wife asked me about 20 minutes later what I wanted for my birthday (apparently I'll be 31 on the 18th, but I'll believe it when I see it) and told me my budget was $150. Clearly I was meant to buy these heads.
So I did.
They came off a good running engine, and they should clean up nice. The only thing I need to be careful of is that the GT40 valves are significantly larger than my stockers and I’ve got flat top pistons...so if my cam has more lift than stock (I think it’s stock), I’ll either have to notch the pistons (probably not gonna happen) or go back to a stock cam. Stock cam can get me to my 300 RWHP goal, so that’s not an issue.
A wife who buys you car parts is the sort of wife you want to have, gentlemen.

I’ve been thinking about a set of GT40 heads for the Montego (yes they fit/work haha). Are you having them gone through by a machine shop or are you doing them?
Let me know how it goes.

Well, right now the main demand of my project is that it stays cheap. But I’ll probably still at least get them a once over from a local machine shop, just to make sure they’re nice and straight.
What engine is in your Montego?

Ford 302/5.0
First year of the 302 in Mercury was 1968, and was optioned on my Montego.
I upped it from stock 2 barrel to 4 barrel holley (around 400 cfm), and an edelbrock performer RPM intake. I’ve bounced around the idea of heads for a while. I had some E7’s I got for only 50 bucks, but ended up selling them when I had an offer for 100 for them (doubled my money and E7’s aren’t worth writing home about).

GT40s are a pretty good size step over E7s. The E7 is a decent head, if it’s what you’ve got to work with you can do a little porting and it’s fine. But on the 87-93 HO 302s they’re supposed to be about a 25hp gain over the E7s with nothing else done...double that if you add the GT40 intake and do a little porting.
On my car, it should be an even bigger jump than that since it’s an ‘86 with the garbage E6 head. If you can pick up a set of GT40s or even the GT40P (only reason I wanted the non-P head is that they changed the angle of the spark plugs for some reason, and I don't want to change my headers) for like $100-150, it should be a nice swap for you.

Yeah, the E7’s would still be a gain for me. But, if I’m going to do it, I’d rather have some GT40’s or step all the way up to some aluminum heads. 100-150 is hard to beat for the gain I would get though.
