There has been some debate on whether or not the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia is or isn’t a good looking car. Maybe more honesty it’s whether or not it’s a stunning car or just somewhat mundane.

The opinion I want to know from you is this: Many have compared it to the new BMW M3, not the current M5 and while I think the newest M3 has grown to be a full mid sized sedan and is a suitable comparison today, Isn’t the 2016 Giulia the reincarnation of the E39 M5?

I think its one of those shapes we’ll really like in 10 years.

I think it looks good but isn’t trying too hard like Lexus. It has good lines and I think it will age as well as the e39 M5

That’s and interesting subject, Will the base model Giulia's be as good as or even perceived as well as model 5 series cars?

It resembles the current gen and previous gen of 5-series BMWs more than it does the E39 gen.

Not a fan. From the side its not bad, but Alfa Romeo’s signature grille design is terrible.

Agreed. The M fighters are nice and all, but the vast, vast bulk of these will be 4 cylinder diesel wagons (in Europe). Yet we haven’t seen the mundane version yet, the wagon is still unknown as well.

I would like to see Nibby put a little moving tongue and little moving arms in that first Alfa pic.

The E39 M5 is held is special regard when even compared to it’s stable mates, either the M3, M4 or even M6. Unlike the first 2 generations of the M3 and the currently one off M2, that should change in the next few months, who have a very dedicated and different fan base, the E39 M5 is held in special regard across the board by almost all.

I think the Giulia has the same potential and puts it in a special group of cars, potentially, that include cars like the Lotus Carlton as well.

What appears to be similar sizes, capabilities and the overall idea of a large(ish) 4 door sedan with both muscle and sport car credibility, that’s what, if Alfa pulls it off, makes the Giulia the heir apparent to the E39 M5.

I was under the impression it’s more of a 3-series competitor. It’s certainly sized like one!

Today, yes it is. The F80 Gen M3 is the size of the old E39 M5 so I understand the confusion. I’m talking more about perception and feel of where I think this car, the Giulia, is placed in the overall pecking order of the world of cars.

It’s a perception thing, not a fact by fact or detail by detail argument, nor does it have anything to do with time.

I think it will look dated and bloated in a year. It already does to me, look at that last picture nice and closely. Ugh.
