Me, shaking his hand: “I just wanted to say thanks for taking care of all those amazing cars.”
Him: “It’s my pleasure!”
Me: “You driving anything interesting today?”
Him: “Nah, I’m walking.”
And then Jay Leno walked away, along the front of Kansas City’s Jack Stack Barbecue until the double denim was out of sight. I wasn’t part of the mob to get a picture with him. Jay was cool about it, but sometimes I wonder if he feels like a rare Oryx on the Serengeti before the Great War. Youths on an Instagram Safari snuck up for surprise selfies with Jay to be taxidermized and hung carefully in their cloud-based trophy rooms.
I wanted to talk to him about the Auburn Cord Duesenberg festival I’d been to the weekend prior. His Duesenberg mechanic had been there. But there wasn’t time.
Anyway, it was cool to meet Jay Leno. He rocked the duotone denim. He looked healthy. He was a nice guy.
