I got lured into a click baity article and was pleasantly surprised to see actual research done but unpleasantly surprised to see what Indiana’s market share anomaly was....
A freaking Buick Encore
Check out your own state and tell me if you are surprised.

I believe it.

I couldn’t believe how many 20 year old domestics were still on the road in the mid-west.
I know, 20 year old domestics are everywhere, but that’s all there was!

I'm more interested in the whatsit that has the K900.

I definitely found that one to be the most interesting

NY and the Escalade? Fuck these people. The only reason it sells in such numbers is that idiots at car services buy it instead of the cheaper (and nearly identical) Yukon/Suburban. Did I mention fuck dese people?

Midwesterners are the only people willing (or dumb enough) to keep them on the road.

Apparently the (un)official car of my state is the Audi A6. This pleases me.

California...Kia Soul EV? Really? I know I've been away for almost six years, but I would have assumed something along the lines of a Tesla Model S or Prius or something. But a damn Kia? and the Soul nonetheless? Really? Step it up Cali!

I'll be honest, I'm jealous.

Kia Forte. I thought it would be a Silverado or Tahoe.

I saw another state had it and thought, “Wow, that’s cool.” Lo and behold, it ended up being mine.
That said, the real state car for my state would probably be a Suburban or something because soccer moms.

“Willing” is definitely part of it I think.
I’m so used to the DC area, where the average income us higher and everyone seems to buy a new car more often. New cars cost the same here as they do in rural Indiana, so that new $25K car may be a tougher sell out there.
I just assume that the old rule,
“It’s always cheaper to fix what you have”
is actually being followed.

Audi S6 for NJ. With all the damn German cars in this state, I’m not surprised (I’ve seen more 2 series than Corollas this year).
Although the state car of NJ not being an IROC-Z with a red horn hanging from the rearview just seems wrong.

Makes sense. The Soul EV is only sold in CA and like 5 other states. So when you aggregate you get a big goose egg for like 40+ locations. Skews the numbers. If they limited it to cars registered in more than 50% of states I’d guess the Model S would be CA’s.

Huh, I didn't know that.

North Carolina has the Kia K900
![]() 09/15/2015 at 09:04 |

It’s a EV compliance car just like the 500EV, RAV4 EV, Spark EV, etc...made to meet CARB requirements, not necessarily to sell for volume or profit. CA has a requirement that the top X manufacturers selling vehicles in the state must have a certain number of EV credits...they get them either via kludging together an EV on a gas platform (aka compliance cars), actually having a go at a real EV (see i3), or by buying them from folks like Tesla who have a surplus.

Nevada is the Fiat 500L?!? Must be fleet sales? Do real people actually buy those?
![]() 09/15/2015 at 09:06 |

No. They are not. They are tarted up Chevys - GM charges tens of thousands for a bit more leather and some badges. Horrible.

AND Arizona? Maybe that car secretly has the best air conditioning EVER.

Haha the Leaf is not what you would expect in GA.

Uuuuhhhhh.....no. They have a bigger engine, better build quality, more features, to name just the basics
![]() 09/15/2015 at 09:31 |

It’s quite noticeable as you drive around New England and get closer to NY that there are more Escalades around. So... yeah.

If it is adjusted for per capita, I suspect WA pwns CA on Tesla model S adoption. They’re so common up here that they don’t even elicit a response when I see them. It’s so bad that the rich guys (like 30% of our population, by the standards of most areas) are trading them in for BMW i8s to stand out a bit.

Very interesting. I wonder how some of that correlates to a manufacturing plant - for example isn’t the Kia Forte made in Alabama? Hmm, looking for that info I can’t find it easily. Kia does have a plant in Georgia...
![]() 09/15/2015 at 09:37 |

Uhhh ... no. The build quality is identical because the Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade are built on the same production line in Arlington, TX .

The Viagra commercial probably resonated with retirees, plus they're cheap. Retirees love cheap and practical, which is why so many bought Scions and keep driving minivans.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 09:38 |

Quality control checks, though. The GMC and Cadillac get a more thorough QC check than the Chevys.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 09:42 |

Dunno why I dislike them so much - probably the badge engineering. Buy the Chevy.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 09:42 |

If you read the explanation, these are new cars that sell distinctly more often in a given state than the country as a whole. Some are obvious because you can fly in somewhere and say, “omg, these are rare where I live, but so many are here!”, while others are because they're a fad among a group of business owners that belong to the same country club in a specific flyover state.

LOL I’ve seen ONE S6 of any generation in Kansas... to put it in perspective, I’ve seen more McLaren MP4-12Cs in Kansas than S6’s

According to the blurbs at the bottom WA state buys the Model S at twice the national average, but CA does it at thrice.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 10:14 |

Exxcceeppptt that’s the EXT. The Avalanche version of the Escalade. I don’t think any car service is buying those.

Dodge Grand Caravan... God dammit Missouri. At least get with the times and buy a crossover!
![]() 09/15/2015 at 10:38 |

That’s clearly a typo - most of the black SUVs in the city are Escalades. Mayor has a Suburban.

I call bullshit on Georgia! The only Nissan Leafs I ever saw was sitting on the car lot, and they never moved. It should be F150 or Silverado, and maybe Tundra/Tacoma but that’s a stretch.

There’s a lot more to New York than New York City.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 10:53 |

True, but my guess would be there are more Escalades in the five boroughs than the rest of the state. So many car services use them, so many wealthy people with drivers - they are everywhere. Might be wrong, but when I’ve been upstate they’re a rare sight.

My state rocks the Fiat 500L.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 11:10 |

I think it’s because it’s relatively fuel efficient and has plenty of room for your rifles. Two things very important in AZ.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 11:12 |
|
That’s because they’re all in the dealership being fixed.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 11:32 |

That’s why I was expecting Indiana to have a Subaru from the plant in Lafayette or one of the Toyota trucks since we have that plant in Indiana as well. But no...Buick Encore.

Well at least you've got company in Illinois ;)
![]() 09/15/2015 at 11:36 |

It's based on your market share vs the national average. So you guys have way more Leafs (Leaves?) than you should based on your size. Not saying silverados and things don't out number them, but it's closer to par than the Leaf.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 11:45 |
|
Yep. I’d love to replace my nearly 10 year old truck. But it’s a LOOOOT cheaper o spend $600-700 a year fixing the old one, than i is to buy a new one. Imma drive that thing into the ground!
![]() 09/15/2015 at 11:48 |
|
HEY! I resemble that!
![]() 09/15/2015 at 12:13 |
|
But that means there are even fewer elsewhere.
Also, your sample size is definitely small.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 12:17 |
|
Since they’re comparing raw numbers, you need to adjust for population. There are 5.5 times as many people in CA.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 12:33 |
|
Already equalized by sales. They’re comparing total of that model purchased nationwide/all cars purchased nationwide vs total of that model purchased in a given state/all cars purchased in that state then finding the delta. I suppose if some state buys more cars per capita it'd throw it off, but I don't think that's a huge difference.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 12:50 |
|
But nobody buys them. They are only purchased when the are priced extremely low. Like the same price as a decked out golf cart.
![]() 09/15/2015 at 13:46 |

Yep. I feel like it’s accurate too. Those dreadful things are everywhere!
