I was recently reminded of the existance of the Daewoo Espero, a vehicle build on the GM J-Body architecture. Unlike the rest of the J-Body vehicles, the
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
was designed by Bertone. Yes,
that
Bertone, of Lamborghini Miura fame. Currently, you can find an Espero for very cheap. For example, I found one

in Australia for $570.13 USD. That got me thinking...
!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
The only rules:
1. The vehicle must have been designed by a major design studio (I’ll let you, the reader, determine what that actually means)
2. The vehicle must be in running, driving condition. (Again, I’ll let you, the reader, determine what that actually means)
3. Try to stick to $USD for an accurate comparision (converting currencies is fine)

He was such a good designer for GM, that they named an SUV after him...

Needs a little work, but it does run and drive.

While not as cheap, Pininfarina is winning things so far.

The cheapest way to get into something designed by Larry Shinoda (of Boss Mustang fame).
The RecTrans Discoverer RV!
Sometimes people just give them away!

It’s cheaper than the Espero for Bertone, if you include shipping costs.

And it’s near me and I’ve always wanted one. But, I don’t have the money.

I can’t find any for sale due to being on the wrong continent and having no clue what sites to use, but the original Fiat Panda can probably be found dirt cheap and it was styled by Giugiaro.

and now probably being sold to teenagers just getting their licenense. Hey, at least they can say their car was designed by the people who designed the Testarossa.

Darn, you beat me to it... I have a super clean 4-cyl though, better than the stupid PRV...

Best part? This car was rear ended a few years ago. Can you tell? Not really.

I mean you can find cheaper, but not in that decent of shape for the northeast.

That looks disgusting. Like a really ugly Beluga. And Belugas are usually cute.

The 780 is a nice looking coupe. There was a 262C (also Bertone) near me a while ago, and that was also quite nice.

Giugiaro’s best...

Bask in the mightiness of the Hyundai Excel Hatchback, circa 1988. It runs and drives if you know how to rebuild an engine. Yours for only $350.

The beauty of this car is that the Delorean exists, so you could actually make a decently powerful N/A V6 with the available performance parts.

I’ve never heard of it before, but it looks awesome!

My parents almost bought one when I was 4, but they wanted too much for it. It sat on the lot until the lot closed when I was 15. We went back to try to buy the sad, run down car right before, and they still wanted $7k for it.

A friend got one a while back (for free! Go figure).
Inside is just as nutty as the outside. We were going to paint it a Blue Green color and name it The Bloated Tick.
It did have a healthy Mopar 413 for power.

Got any pics? The thing sounds like it would be an amazing vehicle, despite it’s gifted looks. 10/10 would go camping in if the interior is as odd as the exterior...

I don’t have pics, he scrapped the project half way through because the Village was threatening fines. I did send some to Curbside Classic though. Maybe I can find them.

Not as cheap as the Volvo, but here’s another Bertone for $1295. There’s probably even cheaper ones out there.

If we were talking original price when new, the winner might be the Frisky which was designed by Michelotti and cost £400 in 1957.

What if I tell you I owned a car designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the same guy that gave us the Delorean DMC-12, Lotus esprit, the 67-73 Maserati Ghibli, De Tomaso Mangusta, BMW M1. I owned a Suzuki SX4, but you too can own a car that he designed. Am I’m almost certain you can find one for next to nothing. The Hyundai Pony, Excel and stellar.

I couldn’t find ItalDesign Giugiaro’s 1988-92 Eagle Premier on CL. They’ve mostly long since died of transmission failure. But 10 years ago, you could find them for $1k or less on occasion.
Give it another 5 years and Giugiaro’s Chevrolet Aveo will be down in the $500 range, as well.
