Good morning,
My significant other recently purchased a 1997 Twilight Blue Miata and is interested in putting on some new wheels and rubber. What are some good size wheel options?
We are thinkingof light auto-crossing it and maybe an HPDE here or there.
It currently has stock wheels, photo (not our car) for color reference:
What should we get?
Budget is $1500 for wheels and tires.

The answer is always RPF1.

Sell it and buy a E36.
No, I’m not biased

That would be the wrong answer.

I have the exact model in the photo you posted and The longer I have those stock wheels the more I like the looks of them. But they weight 14.5 lbs.
I have been eyeing these.
15x7 11.3 lbs $127 some 205/50/15 summer tires and you will be well under your budget. I am really picky about wheels some just do not look good on miatas.
Or go the tried and true but unoriginal RPF1
15x8 28mm offset I don’t know what is lost by going up to a 8” wheel also these are $100 more expensive but they look great are lightweight and strong.
Or just go here and pick out your own!

Also Tire rack has their own house brand TRmotorsports wheels which are really popular.

Look at TRM wheels. Spec miata guys run them. I don’t remember if that year of Medition is 14 or 15in wheels but you only get one option from tire rack for performance 14in wheels. 15in gives you some good options. The best probably being the Dunlop Star specs.

949 Racing 15” 6UL wheels are the de facto standard for the NA. 15” in general is considered to be the best all around size for mixed daily/autox. For daily driving I’d go 7” wide, for more aggressive driving I’d go 7.5” (if you can find it) or 8”.
My choice, and what I bought and run, was Tire Rack’s internal brand TR Motorsports 15x7.5 C1 (42mm offset) with 195/50R-15 Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Specs. For track days and autocross, this combo is AMAZING. The wheel is a bit heavier than the 6ULs and RPF1s, but significantly cheaper (like 40% cheaper), and widely available in 7.5”. Word on the street is they’re manufactured for Tire Rack by Enkei, so it’s essentially the cheaper sibling of the great RPF1.
I highly recommend the Z2 StarSpecs, and I’m sure the only better setup at the autox/track is a pure slick. However, they are much louder and harsher than all seasons...but the increase in steering response and grip is orders of magnitude better than before.
For daily driving with very light autox/hdpe I would go for something a little less aggressive, probably the summer Dirrezza DZ102 or the all season Continental Contiprocontact if you’re only going to 1 or 2 autoxs a year.
