GM’s SCV is probably the best most underrated feature ever.

What does that do?

GM’s SCV is probably the best most annoying underrated feature ever. It took me a while to figure out what the hell was going on the radio volume.

SCV= Speed Controlled Volume. The faster the vehicle goes, the more road noise, so it will increase the volume of the radio when the speed increases. Great feature. I’m constantly turning my volume up or down I feel like.

I can see that being useful. I’ve usually got the roof off, which means I need it pretty loud at highway speed, but when I’m stopped and everyone can hear me I want it way down.

miata has that

Speed Controlled Volume. The stereo automatically gets a bit louder as you go faster, in order to counteract road/wind noise. You can adjust its effect high / med / low / off. I usually use high in the summer (I always have my windows down when it’s warm) and medium in the winter.

I always wondered what that did, but I've never fiddled with it at speed so I thought it was broken, whatever it was. Cool!

Not sure how common it now, but my 2013 Subaru also has it.
Back in the early 2000’s GM’s were the only ones I can remember with it. One of the few redeeming features on my dad’s 2001 Oldsmobile when he bought it.

Yep.
Though, automatic headlights kick even more ass.

Theres not enough praises in this world that can be sung for its simplicity - its right there instead of buried in a bunch of menus and submenus

I believe the new Mustang has it too.

The Pontiac radios do it automatically. That is, SCV is always on, not selectable like the Chevy radio.
One warning though, don’t change the volume while the car is moving if the SCV is on (with the Chevy radio), or ever (with the Pontiac radio). Turning the volume down when moving with SCV on will actualyl make it go *up*
ONLY turn the volume knob when the car is STOPPED, preferably waiting a couple seconds after being stopped.

Not with DRL. The lifts never go off. I'm always pissed when I want to flash lights at someone and it's just the parking lights.

Oh yeah, my wife's car has something like that, I barely notice it.

My Mom once had a Montana that had the little knob. Liar.

The Bose head unit that came in my Miata had the same thing with an added feature: a toggle mode that changed the compensation algorithm based on the top being up or down.

What year was the Montana? The Pontiac radio I have experience with is a 99 Grand Am. The automatic SCV radio in question looks like this:

Montana was an ‘01 or ‘02.

Ah, I see. Yeah I think they changed the radio around that time. Found some with a button for SCV. Did yours look like this?

I thought they were cool too until I realized on some models you can’t fucking turn them off, so you can’t really sneak in at 2 am without sending light into your parents room.

Iunno. This was years ago. I just remember playing with the knob and realizing what it did.

God, the most disgusting pieces of interior design, maybe ever.

That is the exact same radio in my 2002 Camaro. That being said, I have taken many a 1.5 Din GM radio to the shooting range....

My Mazdaspeed3 has this. It’s called ASC or something. I leave it off because only I tell my music how loud to blast.

Mine (Canadian model) don’t turn off at night at all. Like, there’s an “O” counter-clockwise from “AUTO”, but I can’t turn anything off, which is annoying for the reason you said.

Dude, neutral and push. Or what I used to do is park my car around the corner and wait until my dad left for work and then I’d quietly sneak back in.

Our driveway was gravel and had steep angles, I wasn’t pushing a 4500lbs SUV anywhere.

My ‘12 base-model Mazda5 has a seven-level system and I think it is one of the great features. However, I added a Bluetooth kit that completely bypasses the head unit so when I’m listening to the phone I lose that feature as well the rear speakers and steering wheel controls - anything to do with the head unit, actually. The other models don’t have this problem because they get Bluetooth with the factory head unit, but I had to be different and get the one model with the manual transmission and for that I am punished...

Yikes. I only had a lowly 240sx back then.
