Did he run Baja with it?

A leaky gas tank, busted taillight and blown engine? Those are things I’d expect on a 1996 Grand Am not an 09 VW.

not going to happen in a golf chassis.

CP even if it was still 3500 with a new engine.

Ah, Volkswagen.

Think this sounds suspiciously like a situation where VW isn’t at fault though. More like 87,194 miles between oil changes.

“This is bullshit! This car is six-years-old and is basically useless! You never told me anything about an ‘oil change.’ It’s 2015. Why do cars still need those? I’m never buying a Volkswagen again.”

If we can make a W12 fit, we can make a V10 TDI fit.

Seriously WTF? Either:

- No oil changes at all

- Towing heavy shit

- Shitty fixes like the epoxy probably contributed to its demise

I loved this car when they first made it. I still love it.

I think they should sell it. This would be equal to dropping the mike and walking away as the winner of the hot hatch wars. With this, VW can stay without developing new hot hatches for a good 5 - 10 years and not worry about competition lol

Nah. It’s a neat concept, but complete rubbish to drive. It also totally defeats the point of a hothatch (which is performance, fun, practically, and economy concentrated into one package). There is no target market for this thing, and a serious attempt at making it legal for sale would result in a six figure price tag. This over an R8 would be an even harder sell than the Phaeton was.

With all that said, I still want my V10 TDI Tiguan.

I mean, they could de-tune and give it a street friendly suspension.

Even make it an additional package that can be added to a few year models of golfs/polos, where destroyed V10s are re-built and put into these cars and offer a warranty?

Yes, it would be probably be $50k package, but I’d be happy to see these on the road.

Tuning and suspension ain’t the issue. The wheelbase is too short, and a W12 is not light. It either needs to be longer, or they need to put a different (read: considerably smaller and less exciting) engine in it if it’s going in the middle.

I don’t understand...why would you need a longer wheelbase for the engine, if its going in the middle?

Kinja'd!!! PS9 > Tapas

Snap oversteer. Mid engine cars have a lower rotational inertia compared to other configurations. A short wheelbase = small turning radius. Add all those things together with a W12 anvil at the center of the car, and you get snap oversteer for days. It’s so bad, you can’t take the thing into any turn in a spirited way without ending up in the dirt, as Clarkson found out.

Ever notice with mid-engine cars that the car gets longer as more power/cylinders/boost gets added? Compare the Elise, the MR2, the Caymen/Boxster, and the 4C to the Aventador, 458, Tesstarossa and the Carrera GT. More power/bigger engine almost always must come in a longer package, and that’s not an accident. Longer wheelbase = bigger turning radius = somewhat mitigating effect on snap oversteer. This is why a W12 mid-engine golf needs to be a longer car to actually work as something someone could buy and live with or use as a track toy. That or use a much smaller engine.
