Escort / Tracer cupholders are the most useless thing in existence, barely beating out Kim Kardashian. The later generation is worse, because the dash that sticks out above it protrudes more. My solution was to wedge beverages between the ebrake and the passenger’s seat.

Yeah, I do that for smaller drinks. The problem here is that I decided to go all-out and get the 72oz cup from Quiktrip now that their summer deal is over... it can’t be wedged between anything anywhere.

The worst part is those plastic window-mounted cup holders don’t fit unless you roll the window out of the way and carry your drink on the outside of the car, which I’m sure I’ll end up doing at least once in the future just for the hell of it.

At least you HAVE cup holders. The Germans didn’t even know they existed until the 2000’s.

I had one of those on the Ram 50. It fit on the inside of the door. But with 91-96 E/T door cards you’d have to screw it to the door.

They’re not cupholders. They’re glorified change bins. They’ll hold a can of soda - that’s it. Anything taller hits the dash. Anything larger diameter won’t fit.

In its defense drinks were canned mostly back then. They didn’t foresee nearly gallon sized fountain drinks.

Most of my vehicles haven’t had cup holders. The Mazda’s are pretty decent but I mostly use the “sports drink holder” (yes that's what they call them) in the door to hold my water bottle. Downside is if I have a smaller bottle it rattles a little when the bass hits because it means against the speaker.

Meant for these:

Back then, 12 ounces was sufficient refreshment

This is my cup holder. It actually does the job pretty well, all things considered.

It’d be annoying if I actually wanted to drink the beverage while on the move, but I don’t think I’ve ever done so before.

On a related note: your drink is making me want something fizzy and yellow, even though I’m generally not overly fussed about Fanta and such. Might have to hedge and go for some neon orange Irn Bru.

My Peugeot of similar vintage does have cupholders. Well, had, as I built an (OEM) arm rest over them. When I take a longer trip (3+ hours?) during which drinking becomes useful I just grab a bottle and throw it on the passenger seat. Problem solved.

It does still have cupholders in the back. Useless ones, but they’re there.

I don’t remember seeing cupholders in the 306. There certainly aren’t any in the 205s or the E30t.

Toyota? Tercel? Corolla? T-handle shifter and blue interior...

I wouldn’t be surprised if the only car in Peugeot’s ‘90s lineup with cupholders was the 406 Coupé. They’re one of those things I’ve just never felt the need for, though I would find the transport of fast food beverages and such irritating if the gap between the door and the passenger seat didn’t hold them so handily.

Volvo’s from the 80s and 90s are even worse - two shallow indentations on the back of the glovebox door, that’s it. Can only be used from the passenger seat, and only when the vehicle is stationary and not parked on a slope.

First gen RX-7 was the same.

Red solo cups fit in mine, haha! I use them for water on the 5 minute drive across town to school.

The vehicle should be parked and stationary while enjoying a glass of brandy with your date in your 760 Turbo.

‘94 Escort, actually. Definitely the right era and class, though. I love the colorful fabric in ‘90s economy cars.

Exactly. Cup holders should be just the right size to hold three hockey pucks flush with the console, with a half-inch indentation at the bottom to keep cans and small cups steady. Any deeper or wider is excessive, but any smaller is just useless.

The weird thing is it’s slightly too small for those. I mean, they do fit, but they’re so snug that I pull out the removable liner (the entire black area) every time I go for a sip. If I just don’t push it in as tightly, it’ll flop out onto the floor at the first corner.
Regardless how big the drinks of the time were, it should be slightly deeper and wider, rather than trying for a perfect fit.

I considered Dremeling them out and making them larger using a plastic McDonald’s cup, epoxy, and fiberglass.

Short personal cup holder history, had 4 cars in six years.

first 1988 VW Polo Ranger. Zero Cupholders.

Second 2000 VW Polo 16V. One retractable, gorgeously damped action perfect height on dash could hold up to a large can of Red Bull.

Third 1998 Mazda Mx-5. Two, in cubby behind shifter, basically unusable as cubby lid has to be open and that’s where your arm rests naturally.

Fourth, 2005 VW Golf GTI. 4 with an additional bottle holder in both doors. Shit aint clever but I can haul all the open containers.
