Kinja'd!!!

This morning during the short walk from my car to the door at my school, I was greeted with a faint rainbow seemingly arcing over the school. This could be a taken as a sign that this Friday would be a good day, but it could also, more accurately, be taken as a sign that it would rain like a MFer.

And rain it did. Constantly. Happily, the weather broke around 3 as I was exiting school to get back in my car to drive home and prepare for a nice cool night of high school football. Sadly my plans were shattered as I opened my door and was greeted with this:

Kinja'd!!!

In case you are unable to tell, the drivers side footwell of my Merkur was wet. Very wet.

Kinja'd!!!

In a car with an evident rust problem, the last thing you want is standing water inside the car, so out came the wet or dry shopvac. I also removed the drivers seat for easier access to the swamp that is my pedal box.

Kinja'd!!!

Once everything was out of the way, I put my fog machine in the car and fired it up to see where the water was coming in. And yes, I do have a fog machine.

Kinja'd!!!

There’s your problem.

Kinja'd!!!

So apparently the hole is somewhere in the firewall near the fusebox, pretty much exactly where I expected. Tomorrow begins the process of trying to repair it, because driving with a snorkel isn’t very practical.

Rust issues?

That’s not typical for Merkurs in my experience. And I live in the heart of the “Rust Belt”.

The Fog machine is a great idea!

Wow. We used a smoke machine to leak test an intake, but I never thought of using it to check for leaks. I’m going to try it on my Porsche to find exactly where in the firewall the water is leaking into the passenger footwell.

Works really well, just warn your neighbors before hand, I had 2 come over to make sure nothing was on fire with phones in their hands ready to call the fire department haha
