Nurburgring Rovering is, I think the definition
.
Because racecar. Racecar hat.
These two are from a Darien pass expedition to show off the Range Rover. The Series on the expedition were pathfinders.
Noted: full of eels.
Okay, not a *much more* bad idea than a “normal dragster”, but probably still bad.
The Bell Aurens Longnose is only bad in that you could never get into an intersection ever again. Also, slightly ridiculous.
Advertising bad idea.
No road - except for OH SHIT
I’m sorry, this < is the biggest picture of that insanity that shows up.
“BALLS”
No, this guy is actually doing what you think he’s doing. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! by the tail while leaning out of a moving vehicle. I can’t even.
And of course, in fiction...
More fiction.
“OW”

I’m not sure, this rather seems like the Land Rover best ideas post.

Possibly “best ideas UNLESS YOU’RE A WUSS” post.

There’s something to be said for the lost art of YOLO With Style.

I will say, the lead image makes me want to build an 88” into a Land ‘Ringer/Ring Rover. Maybe just hang some body panels on an old TVR or something.

With the end of the Defender at the end of this year, we will be left with a huge gap here in Yurop whem it comes to trully capable offroaders. Toyota’s offerings were always a second fiddle to LR, even if they are better. It is so sad, that LR didn’t grandfathered into some limited series like what is Lada doing with the Niva in Europe.

No, Mr Bond, I expect you to die!

You could build a 2WD “Lowver” on the cheap if you had a Stage 1 or some of the parts thereof. Fit a straight axle in front, swap to the 2WD version of the trans, use the existing mounts to fit a YOLO-style abomination 5.0 built RV8 (or use adapters for an RV8->LS), and wrap it all up with some lowered leaf springs and a front swaybar.

Bigger version of this from classic driver .
Also, the Bell Aurens Land Rover is not a bad idea at all.

Very nice. I did add some text that the Bell Aurens is mostly only a very silly idea, and only bad in terms of intersections.

That picture is pure distilled bad decision.

this looks safe. aren’t you supposed to be BEHIND the safety barriers?

It’s “why did you turn” taken over 9000 - and actually being pulled off. Note to self - having high enough competence to pull off a bad idea does not make it unbad. Though it does make it impressive.

It’s not like anybody coming around that curve is going to be hooning so hard they nearly lose control OH WAIT

This is one of my favorites here, but I don’t know the story behind it. It’s featured in my ‘74 World of Automobiles encyclopedia, but with no details - and that’s probably where it comes from on the web as well.

I think back then things we see now as bad ideas were pulled of quite regularly, it was just how things were done. People had more of a “make do” spirit, that we have lost in the modern day.

I think with widespread adoption of “better ways” and the sense that adopting higher standards of safety is most important, a lot of people with the cleverness to make this sort of thing work have been educated out of any attempt - leaving “bad ideas” only to be implemented and conceived by idiots. There’s a whole gray area of questionable that just isn’t explored much anymore outside the third world.

It does highlight rather well that Rovers styling men were, in the 50s, being dragged kicking and screaming into the 30s.

Yes, a big part of it is safety but, I think people really get hung up on “I need x to do x.” Not, “Can I do x with x?” To me it’s part consumerism, we get told these are the things you need to these things. Nowadays we don’t think, “Can I do x with what I have?” We just go buy the things we think we need to do something.
