Tell me all about Oppo’s opinion on the Honda CRZ.

What do we like?

What do we dislike?

Would you buy one?

Know someone who has bought one?

If you have owned one (or a friend has), was the ownership experience good?

Any other comments?

Almost.

It’s almost fun. Almost sporty. Almost stylish.

If Honda would ditch the hybrid crap and just let us have a 6MT with a 1.4-1.6L VTEC (Yo!) engine it could be quite fun. The lack of batteries would make it much lighter, so it would be fun to toss around. The mileage wouldn’t really suffer that much since it’s already so light. And a real engine means that one can drive it like a hoon normal person without the hybrid baggage slowing your roll.

There’s very little if any redeeming qualities of the CR-Z. It’s not particularly sporty or fun to drive, it doesn’t really have any “oomph” it’s not even all that efficient despite being a hybrid vehicle. Oh, and it also has horrible blind spots going out the back thanks to the split window in the rear.

I remember looking at one as a possibility for a new car because despite all that, the exterior I think looks nice. But there’s nothing else really to it other than that.

If you want a sporty, economical, and efficient vehicle; get a Mazda3.

Considering buying one? or just getting a general mood among the oppos? I think you will find that it wasn’t enough hybrid for the eco crowd and wasn’t enough sport for the fun crowd. Wasn’t “cute enough” to offset its lack of fun and wasn’t sharp enough to offset its lack of power. Its “meh” with a capitol “H”

well considering something more fuel efficient, won’t break the bank, and something more grown up. Wanted the general opinion really

Buy a GTI or a Focus / Fiesta ST instead. You’ll be much better off.

All they needed to do with this is to dump the batteries...that’s it. It would have gotten only marginally worse economy but been TONS better to drive. The best guesses are that its adds about 140 lbs, but contributes only 14 hp. Yeah it smooths out the torque curve but its didn’t do enough. even with only the L15a7 and 120 hp it would have been faster, sharper and more fun.

You know, this is what I just don’t get. I think by most people’s account this car really never reached the potential that Honda thought it had. And as you mentioned, it isn’t green enough, or sporty enough. So why doesn’t Honda try something else?

They already have the car, it just needs a better engine. Looking through the lineup though, I can’t say where that engine would come from though. The Fit and the CRZ both make 130HP, from a 1.5. Does the hybrid system account for any of that in the CRZ (couldn’t find the answer)? Otherwise it’s just the same engine as the Fit. And seeing as how the Fit weighs less and isn’t a screamer with that 130 HP, what’s the answer?

The 1.8 from the Civic? Would that even fit? Not to mention that one only makes 18 more ponies.

I guess my whole point of this was that how does Honda make the CRZ live up to its looks/potential with off the shelf parts they already have?

I owned one for a few years.

I liked it a lot. I tend to drive pretty conservatively on the street, but it was perfect for a commuter car for me. Good on gas, really well-made, quick enough to be fun, and pretty incredible looking.

Now, this was pre-lithium batteries, pre “S+” button, and it still felt good to drive. The electric part of the hybrid system feels like a wimpy supercharger - it really makes a difference at the low end. The six-speed is pretty excellent, too. Very smooth. I had a catback on it as well, which sounded shockingly good for a hybrid.

I’ve found that most of the people who complained about them when they came out were really expecting a CR-X. It’s not. I found that a pretty good number of the people who criticize it for being gutless and slow have never driven one.

My biggest complaint with the car was probably the silver interior that they came with in 2011-2012. They’ve since remedied it with darker material, but those seats got dirty so quickly. I had fitted leather seat covers, which were a solid investment.

I’d probably still be driving mine if not for a hit & run. So, what else do you want to know?

e: the big question - would I buy another one? Well, no. I’d get a Fiesta ST. The CR-Z is great, but I just can’t recommend it that strongly.

I think they should make the 1.5 from the Fit a 1.4L, add VTEC (yo!) and toss the Mugen suspension bits on at the factory. They’d have to offer an auto, lame, but the option of a 6MT would still sell enough to keep it around.

Maybe have options like an LSD and other go-fast bits at the dealer level with warranties. Basically make it the true CRX successor it should have been.

The biggest issue is the hybrid junk that muddles the performance and handling. Making the CRZ engaging to drive with a peppy, tiny little engine for economy would sell tons. I know I’d be interested.

yay an owner...well previous owner, sorry for the loss.

What was your average gas mileage? I have roughly a 30 mile commute (that’s back and forth), half spent on a highway, half spent on local roads.

The year range I’m looking at is the 11-12 (price depending and all), what year was yours? Anything you know that’s good/bad about the 11-12’s?

They are kinda funky. Almost had one over my civic.

They aren’t very practical. Awful blind spots out the back.

They aren’t really sporty but they aren’t really fuel efficient (the civic had higher mpg ratings)

Even the dealer told me that it won’t hold its value anywhere near what the civic would.Youd be better off getting a civic or si coupe.

It's just like the CT200h, decent body shell, decent suspension/dynamic...hell all around decent other than a terribly ill advised power train. Put a standard 2.0T in either of them and they'd have buyers, but the weak sauce hybridization puts it in no mans land.

The CRZ makes 116 hp wihout the IMA, and 130 with it. Frankly, 14 hp isn’t worth the ~140 weight gain from the IMA and batteries. Yeah, there is the 58 lbs-ft of torque but it doesn’t really make a good showing ever and contributes very little to the speed.

I lived and drove in the city and didn’t try to drive conservatively. I averaged 34-35mpg most of the time. Not stellar, but not bad for a car under those circumstances.

That was a 2011... I’m not sure that there’s much to look out for, honestly. You’d have a better time searching forums, because I didn’t have any serious issues with it. I only put on about 24k miles while I had it (in 30 months).

Good luck!

I think it’s okay... I don’t hate it. But it could be sooooo much better.

I dislike that the current CRZ has no performance model. Imagine if Honda had sold the original CRX in ‘HF’ form only and never offered the Si. And that’s what Honda should do... rename the current CRZ as the CRX HF and than also make a CRX Si.

I would buy one if I wanted an efficient 2 seat commuter... if I could buy it used for the right price.

I don’t know anyone who owns one and I have never owned one.
