Back to Design Details after last week’s absence...after last time’s focus on the best plastic hubcaps, let’s look at which steelies looked the best, worst, or most distinctive. As you may know, several automakers choose to style their basic steel rims instead of fashioning a crappy plastic cover over a standard steelie.
Case in point:
Honda has created a slightly fancier silver wheel instead of a cheap plastic cover on the last Pilot (the new has all alloys...)
Also, one of the first things that appears on Google when you search “stylized steel wheels” are these Mustang ones, so I figured they get a mention here as well:
So what do you think, Oppo?
What are the best/most distinctive steel wheels designed either OEM or otherwise?
Hint: Try Googling the Nissan NV2500. Those are some pretty funky steelies.

The white painted steel whees found on many ‘80s Subarus are pretty distinctive.

These are definitely steelies underneath. So awesome of fender flares

Sometimes, they were red.

Pre-refresh Camaro LS wheels have to be my favorite modern steelies.

Oooooh, yes! I saw these a few weeks ago and thought of creating this article but forgot about them in the meantime...one of my favorite looks for the Camaro...
Simply badass.

Love the fender flares as well, and as ugly as those wheel covers seem, I love them and they seem to fit right in on the 240z...but the question is what did the steelies underneath look like?

I just wish I could get that look with the V8. I guess the 321 horsepower V6 isn’t bad, but damn that with a V8 burble would be awesome.

Wheel swap would probably be incredibly easy and you would end up with an awesome sleeper...

Dude the want to buy and resto-mod a 60s era mustang is growing so much.

Personally I prefer the steelies on the base model forester to the alloys on the Premium and Limited models.

Eh, IMO the Forester steelies are kind of bulgy in the wrong places...I don’t really like the XT wheels either...
These really do it for me though, the lace wheels on the JDM tS variants...

I kinda like the bulginess. I kinda like the XT wheels, especially in the painted form on the Touring.

Mmm, they are much better when painted...

That picture was from a 240ZG
This photo is from the base 240z

Oooooh, I love those black steelies!
Reminds me of a C110.

The new Renegade has some cool steelies too:
