2015 Subaru WRX STi being prepared by the Top Run team to race in the TCR touring car series. The car was !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to FWD to conform with the series rules. Talk about having to neuter a car for racing. It’s set to debut at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Don’t they sell FWD imprezas for the JDM

I’d imagine it’ll be way faster than a standard wrx round a track. FWD touring cars are ferociously fast, not to mention aero and weight advantages this would have other a standard wrx. Take the Mclaren 650s GT3 has over 100 hp less than the road car but is still faster than the near 1000hp P1 GTR round a track.

That seems pretty cool, but I’m wondering why they didn’t start with something that was already FWD, like a base-model Impreza?

The base mode Impreza is not FWD. all subarus are AWD.

Probably the best way to get the shell and drivetrain they wanted. The STi has a lot of differences to the base cars.

I doubt it would be due to FWD rules and more likely due to power limits. In touring car racing power to weight is everything and AWD is very heavy and not very useful.

The base model Impreza in the US is AWD. The base model elsewhere is still available FWD, like in Japan.

That maybe true outside of Japan, but in Japan the Impreza G4 (Sedan) and Sport (Hatch) are available in 2WD.

I know that 1st and 2nd gen (until 2007) were offered with 2WD in Japan, but I am not sure about the current car. Definitely not with the 2.5L turbo engine in the STI (or the 2.0L twin scroll is this is a JDM car).

No they’re not. The previous Gen was available in FWD, and the current one is apparently offered as FWD in Japan.

Yes they do.

The previous gen was also available as FWD. The only one that was AWD only was the bugeye.

It’s set to race at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sept 20th so I imagine its pretty much done. The team has been testing the car already.
