TVR Thursday.
Here’s a TVR that was too TVR for TVR. Speed Twelve, a 7.7 litre V12 with unknown but more than sufficient power and weighing about a tonne. The racing version was limited to about 675 bhp while the proposed road going one broke the dyno and so TVR had to estimate each bank of the engine separately giving a suggested 960 bhp.
The engine was based on two of their existing straight sixes with (unusually) steel blocks.
The late Peter Wheeler who owned the company at the time thought it too powerful for the road and he was a person not unaccustomed to serious power.
One was eventually sold to a private and brave buyer who was personally vetted by Wheeler.
