Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.
Back in the Land of the Rising Sun for this week’s Generation Gap, we have a nameplate that is revered (well, at least respected) in Japan but very obscure to the American citizen. The car in question is the Nissan Cima (name derived from Spanish word for ‘summit’) whose latter generations have been mirrored in Infiniti’s U.S. market cars. The question though, as always, is does the new beat the old?
The options:
First Generation [1988 - 1991] Y31
Second Generation [1991 - 1996] Y32
Third Generation [1996 - 2001] Y33 aka Infiniti Q45 FY33
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Fourth Generation [2001 - 2010] F50 aka Infiniti Q45 F50 and facelift (for both)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Fifth Generation [2012 - Present] Y51 aka Infiniti Q70L aka Mitsubishi Dignity
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

First gen, but the first pic of the fourth gen looks pretty damn good. Fifth can GTFO.

First is ripe for US import, and 10/10 I would totally grille swap an Infiniti for any Cima generation...I don’t hate the Fifth mainly because I kind of like its bulgy styling (heinous, I know) and I appreciate all of them in a kind of JDM style way...

Too bad the US versions never had hood ornaments :(

Definitely. Hood ornaments add instacool VIP style when affixed to a large Japanese luxobarge...

Very accurate.

Y31 all the way. If a nice stock one pops up at the JDM auctions in the next couple weeks, I’ll be bringing one in.
This one is done just right...

What a beauty! Personally not sold on the color but everything else is amazing! It looks like a bigger car than I had expected, with a longer trunk than my example image suggested...

Indeed, that is quite staggering...

Awesome! Really love these things, would like to have one someday...

Now the next time I see an Infiniti Q70 (If I ever see one), my brain wil want to call it a mitsubishi dignity

Well then you should see my article a few weeks back on the Mitsubishi Proudia, the Dignity’s shortwheelbase cousin (basically what the Fuga is to the Cima...)

Agree, same case in America for the first few generations...we can import them now though, so time to search Goo-Net!

Thanks! YOU CAN DO IT. The gas mileage is terrible but the Cima has been a wonderful car to live with so far.
