We hear on Oppo are biased as shit, there’s no debating that. We are all have stuff we like and we all have stuff we hate, especially manufacturers. So here’s what I propose. Pick one company, ONE company, that you absolutely hate and despise, and say one nice thing about them. It could either be a philosophical thing, or it could be a car they made back then or
make now that you like. Just say one nice thing about them
For me, one company I absolutely despise is SAAB.
I don’t like SAAB, nor do I like the cult-like status that is worshipped around here. I find their cars ugly to look at, I think that they’re reliability nature is bullshit, there’s nothing interesting about them. But what’s the defense I hear? “Oh, it’s different. It’s weird. It went against the norm.” Okay, leaving aside the fact that those excuses have been used by pretentious morons for years, just because something is different, doesn’t mean something is good. Saab was different, didn’t mean they were good though.
But I will say this in their defense. They were at least honest. Maybe it’s just my priorities being skewed awkwardly, but there’s something honest about their cars. I like manufacturers that are honest, I like it when they decide to do what they want to do, rather than follow trends and try and be something they’re not. So yes, there is one thing I can say about Saab in a positive light, it'll be the only time though so enjoy it.
Okay Oppo, now it’s your turn. Say one nice thing about a car company you hate or give one car they made you like. Can you guys do that?

Hummer. I think the H1 was pointless as a civilian vehicle, and the H2 and H3 were just pointless. But Hummer were good at cultivating an image of off-road use and using that to sell vehicles, all genuinely truckish and off-road capable (no crossovers), so I guess there’s that.

I hate the logo. Most of the cars just feel so cheap and light. The recalls have been a nightmare. The cars aren’t even that affordable anymore and I feel a better option exists in nearly every category. (I like the classics but anything post 2000 really is what I dislike)
BUT:
The C7 Corvette. Wow. They did a really solid job with this car. It looks good, sounds good, and a lot of people say its so much better than the C6. One of the only modern Chevys I would own

Umm... Audi and Porsche have impressive racing histories, but I just don’t like them.
AMC made interesting cars and saved Jeep from death, but I think the quality was subpar and I don’t like the timing cover on their V8s.

I always figured that had GM seriously put money into Hummer rather than just spend time on hocking merchandise, they could maybe have come up with a genuine competitor to Jeep.

After working at a dealership and trying to sell different brands whenever they came in, the hardest for me was Ford...specifically trucks. Not because nobody wanted them but because they were always broken in one way or another and being sent away to auction. We had people asking about these trucks so often that any time we got one in on trade, we’d have to hide them in the back to avoid having to tell people we couldn’t sell it.
But what I will say after all of that is that their trucks always looked nice, even when complete junk, always looked good and hard to convince people otherwise.

Stop it. Stop talking. I don’t care about rotaries. I don’t care about the miata. You didn’t bring your fucking turbodiesel here like you said you would and the next person who tells me there is a new RX-7 coming out is getting shanked. You were nothing more than a ford rebadge for about a decade and were unceremoniously dumped and fed to the wolves because you are just too quirky for plebians but don’t have the sheer balls to go full daedist on the market and make a mazdaspeed5 and be “all enthusiast all the time” like your adverts see to suggest you want.
HOWEVER!
There is one thing I can say about mazda that I can’t say about the camry-cord-alibu-sion - People *know* when they see a mazda. Your styling department brings their A-game even when all you’re told to do is make a fusion look presentable.....Except for the tribute. ut I’ll ignore that because the CX-5 made everyone else redsign their CUVs and crossovers in halfhearted attempts to not look completely outclassed even though they were.

Nissan makes beige, CVT equipped, boring things that are ass ugly. But the new Maxima is fucking hot.

General Motors. I think the saying is that their cars run like shit longer than most cars run at all, but the fact of the matter is that GM can build the hell out of an engine.
If the rest of their cars were as good as their engines, people would have a vastly different picture of them.
![]() 09/09/2015 at 16:03 |

Fuck Toyota with any of their Lexus line.
My bias comes from terrible childhood experiences with Lexus owners, my perception of the vehicles I could afford from them being crap and my friend’s (and general public) blind sheep purchase of their vehicles without cross shopping. I hate Toyota.
But they give the market a manual transmission, 4x4 pickup that they pay attention to and are also responsible for the Toyobaru twins. Both of those things make me very happy.
Also, the green they have on the Corolla (fuck the Corolla) is gorgeous and deserves to be on another car.
![]() 09/09/2015 at 16:04 |

They can build an engine real well, there’s a reason that the Chevy Small Block remains a top engine swap choice.
The other thing I can vouch for, they had the best A/C units. In the hot California summers in a black interior car, my Cadillac’s A/C makes the entire cabin a meat locker in just ten short minutes.
People have said "if GM built cars like they built engines, they could rule the world." I say if GM built cars as good as they built their A/C units, they WOULD rule the world.

Nope. Mazda helped do some work, mostly on their own suspension designs, but those were ford platforms for use by volvo and mercury as well. I think *maybe* the probe/mx-6 was more mazda than ford. But overseas, yes ford would rebadge the mazda tuned car so they had a “euro” product. In America? Mazda sold fords with stiffer springs.

I hate Toyota (this includes Lexus). I see them as beige appliances. On top of that, due to the nature of the poeple who buy them, they are inevitably in the left lane holding everybody up. And it’s not like they got there to pass and forgot to get back over—they literally make a dive for the left lane. If you pass on the left, or if they eventually move over for you, they then speed up to almost the speed you want to do, so to clear the left lane as you should you must go much faster. They will then pass you and slow down to their original speed. They don't seem to have anyone in the company that can roll good looks together with interesting looks. Their cars went straight from beige (but not ugly) to hideous to behold (but therefore interesting). Then, so irritating to me that it deserves it's own special shoutout, you have the Prius, which is all as above plus an extra dose of smug.
I have many more complaints, but coming near to bursting blood vessels over the first couple, I’ve decided to cut this short. Here comes a nice thing:
I respect them hugely for the LFA. And proving that they are the Peugeot (lost their way) of NA (because I don't know how they're viewed in Japan or Europe), rather than a simply boring company, we have the 2000GT, the MR2 and a raft of other not-at-all-boring-or-ugly cars.

Meh. I don’t care for the RX-7 or RX-8. Overall I think Mazda gets too big of a pass for the rotary and the miata. They make okay suspension upgrades for the ford platforms and god knows the last gen escort was way better than anything ford would do on its own......yet its still a wet fart and the probe/mx-6 are bad jokes with shitty punchlines. A lot of these companies do care about enthusiasts too. We are just too focused on cases like Mazda to notice or care.

As someone who was a “youth” when Scion became a thing, I’ve never seen the brand as anything other than a pathetically misinformed marketing ploy.
But now they sell the only car on the market that I would buy new:
Though I’ll be getting the Subaru version because I think it’s better looking:
![]() 09/09/2015 at 16:36 |

Yeah but what performance cars were Ford releasing up until the ST twins? They had the mustang and the UK designed GT. Not exactly trying to be an enthusiast brand. At least mazda tried.
![]() 09/09/2015 at 16:37 |
|
I may not care for the FR-S (I still think it should be called the 86 and sold in Toyota showrooms) but this is the first time they’ve appealed to the “youth market”.
I think anytime an auto-maker reworks a brand or makes a new brand in order to chase fades, or to entice younger buyers, it will always end badly. Especially in the case of Scion and the "youth market".

But Mazda managed to release about the same amount while looking better.
![]() 09/09/2015 at 18:27 |

Nope. Mazda released nowhere near the same amount and they had a limited scope in what they did. Miata, rotary sports car, quick compact. The Mazda Mazda speed 6 was the most unmazda enthusiast car they’ve made in a while. Too bad it explodes after 75k....and it didn’t happen until the mid to late 2000s. Meanwhile Ford has done muscle trucks, sporty mid sized sedans, sporty full sized sedans (oh, Taurus SHO as well), as well as compacts and coupés.

If you look at the ratio of performance models vs vehicle lineup Ford made in that time vs Mazda I think Mazda would come out better. But then I Have never cared for Fords made from roughly the 70’s till 2005, so I could be totally wrong.

ranger=bxx000
escort/mercury capri= 323
probe= mx-6
current n/a ford 4cyl, still a mazda design.
Ford buying interest in mazda was completely a reaction to realizing they couldn’t build a small 4cyl car when they needed to, so they bought someone else’s.
![]() 09/10/2015 at 00:15 |

Well mazda is unique in the japanese brands in that they are cars, first and foremost and......only? I don’t think mazda has any other divisions. Just auto. THey are quite small so that was why ford teamed up with them - they needed an answer to saturn and the JDM attack and mazda had no lineup. In the early 90s they had the FD, the miata, the 323/protege, the MX-6, the MX-3, 626, 929 and then they had the MPV, B2000, and Navajo. Ford had the escort, the probe, the mustang, the taurus, the contour/tempo, the ranger, the F-series, the bronco, the explorer, and the aerostar/windstar.
You can see the overlap, the ford trucks and mazda small cars/coupes being shared. Mazda did share sportiness while ford shared practicality. But my original comment was more referring to the 2000s. The mazda 3 was built on the FORD platform now. Mazda had input, but so did the Ford group (including europe) and volvo. The mazda SUVs and mazda 6 were also ford platforms. RX-8 and miata were the same basic architecture but wildly different takes on it. Mazda5 is......actually kinda cool cause mazda found some balls and sold their minivan as the JDM one instead of making an american van. Everyone goes apeshit over the miata and RX-8 while forgetting that mazda as a whole is largely forgettable during this time period. Lots of little missed opportunities and half-baked ideas. How much was cause dby ford? We’ll never know. But mazda didn’t have electronics or heavy equipment groups to leech money and resources and knowledge from. Meanwhile, Ford has offered some enthusiast variant of pretty much every model made since the 70s. The mazda 929, mazda 626, mazda millenia, all 6es besides the mazdapseed 6 (including liftback and wagon body styles), mazda 5, mazda 2, and all the SUVs have been left to be consumer fodder to feed the miata group. So that’s where my “hate” came from. Mazda isn’t about the enthusiast. They’re sportier beige, sure, but most other makers have more stuff to cater to us.
In all honesty, I don’t hate mazda, but I hate the fanboyism that spreads to the rest of the lineup because they sequester off a group of engineers who just do miata stuff and rotary stuff. Not to say the other cars can’t have good *ideas* but........mazda isn’t that special. And I’m still pissed they never came through with the USA spec turbodiesel 6!!!!
![]() 09/10/2015 at 00:17 |
|
Well that and mazda realizing they had no ability to make anything other than an okay compact and a mediocre sedan for volume sales. B2000 is a ranger, not the other way around. FOrd developed it. In fact, all of mazda’s trucks and SUVs in north america have been Ford platforms. Oh and the mazda 3 and 6 are ford platforms. And the mazda 2. The 5 is all mazda.
I still find it odd that mazda never did a performance version of the 6 after the first gen. Or a mazdaspeed 2. Or a mazdaspeed SUV. The stick shift CX-5 is nice though.

Not a vehicle manufacturer but I hate Firestone. Or at least in their current form. For numerous reasons that I won’t get into. However, their founder Harvey Firestone was a leader of the automotive industry and we wouldn’t be where we are today without him. Haha. Well, it went like this:
Family across the street, grandparents own a restaurant in town and constantly park in the street even though there was a driveway. I got my first bike with gears and it wasn’t shifting properly so my mom was tooling on the gearing and having me test (it was a cheap mountain bike).
I was riding and looking at my feet, chain slipped, I wobbled and ran into the Lexus (at the time, Camry with nice paint haha). Left a scratch of a couple inches. My mom looked at me and I put my bike down, walked to the door and fessed up to the grandmother. She thanked me for my honesty and said not to worry.
Grandfather shows up in his capped F-350 (because pasta dishes for catering are fucking heavy) and goes inside. Comes back out, looks at the car, starts screaming at my parents (outside doing yardwork). I’m in my room upstairs facing the street and I hear him call me all sorts of things. My mom looked up, saw me in the window, told the guy to shut the fuck up and talk inside because I could hear.
Ended with my parents paying for the paint job...which the guy wrangled a full car job instead of just the spot because he’d sue otherwise.
Since then it’s been a series of stupid things like the father turning around in my family’s driveway every morning, even when we got it resealed. Having a buddy plow his driveway snow onto our front lawn (that ended when my mom nearly castrated the plow driver). Them reporting our house for having a choking hazard along the front of our house (town put up caution tape when working on a water line to the house).
Fuck that family.
