Let’s see...

1) saw the new Ford GT

1a) with the guys from Gas Monkey Garage

then, completely separately:

2) Met Matt Farah

3) Met Chris Harris

then:

4) Got a 1/2 mile line of sight microwave network connection up and running. This was the best part, because this equipment is SUPER alignment sensitive, and I got it working via eyeball/dead reckoning. I’ll do the fine tuning/alignment tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I also got a minor sunburn. That’s a bummer.

In a previous job of mine, we had some kind of a line of sight connection to the building next door. I always thought it was lasers, but it could have been microwave as well. I don’t know the technology itself that well. I just know it was super unreliable. It was marginally better than 802.11g back then, and a bit faster as well, when it was working, but any kind of inclement weather, a misplaced bird, and the network next door would be down or losing packets. Granted, that was on 10 year old equipment at this point.. I’d still prepare for a contingency plan though as well..

As long as the sunburn isn’t from the microwave equipment it sounds like a neat day.

This is 24 ghz microwave. I’ve had it in production for a couple years in another location, but I’ve finally got fiber going into that building so I don’t need the microwave there any more. It’s good for 100 megabits, and it’s crazy reliable. I’ve got another pair of radios in the 11 GHz band that are providing a 250 Mbit connection over 13 miles with 4 9’s reliability.

Yep. I also opened a case w/ Cisco TAC and worked it to completion. I had a piece of IPTV equipment exhibit a software failure for the first time in 3 years and all my TV feeds went down. That one took me about 90 minutes to fix - the fix was to unplug and re-plug an SFP. I find this very sketchy.

13 miles?!? That’s impressive. And ours would drop the connection when it rained at 13 yards. It was probably a misaligned laser setup...

It’s good stuff. The gear I use is made by SAF Tehnika. I use CFIP Lumina for my long range connection and the 24 GHz shot range stuff is FreeMile. I use Arkivator antennas.

the gas monkey thing was “no pictures allowed” and you already know what matt farrah and chris harris look like

Used some of that high power point to point stuff for early secure channel freq-hopping datacoms, used long range spotting scopes to do the job.

I like working with Cisco TAC lately. Their engineer team has been on point lately.

The guys that installed our 13 mile shot used math and GPS. I think at 13 miles you also have to take the curvature of the Earth into account. Luckily, the mounts also have very fine azimuth and elevation adjustments, so you can get it close with math and then tune it w/ a wrench and signal strength meter.

Nice, we were only going point to point little more than a half mile between artillery pos'

I’ve had excellent luck w/ TAC for about 20 years. Having SmartNet on our $$$ equipment and software is expensive as hell, so I call TAC for everything that I’m the least bit unsure about. Even for stuff that turns out to be an easy bullshit fix (like re-seating an SFP) I call those guys up. I’ve opened tickets that were basically “Hey, I’m thinking about doing X - what should I be looking at, what might catch me out and mess me up, etc?” and gotten excellent help and advice.

Same I always get them on board for cutovers below my firewall and anything ever related to ISP updating.

They are definitely worth all the bennies they receive.
