Geba pump with some nasty casting leftovers.

Does it matter what brand of water pump I get? BMW fixed the plastic impeller issue with an updated composite design, but Geba, Febi, and Graf make metal-impeller pumps that cost about half as much as a reman-BMW unit. Does it matter? Pretty sure my 50k mile water pump is leaking from the weep hole.

I’ve installed several Graf/Febi pumps with no issues down the road. Definitely no need to get the BMW reman for twice the price. You should be good with either the Graf or Febi. I don’t have experience with Geba so I can’t comment on them.

Good news - water pumps on e36/46 are super easy to change :)

Go with the metal, and waterless coolant.

I’ve been reading up on it. Looks like I just need to get lucky with knocking my fan clutch loose and then drain down the block/radiator. After that it’s just eight bolts. Thanks for the info.

Que? The BMW antifreeze has me diluting it with water.

No problem. IIRC, the nut on the fan should be a 32mm. If you can’t get a normal wrench/adjustable down in there, head to the bicycle shop and pick up a 32mm headset wrench. They’re real slim so they fit nicely down on the fan nut. Then just wop it with a big hammer a couple of times and it should come loose right away.

You shouldn’t need to remove the radiator to do the job either. Just get the fan clutch off and you should have plenty of room to work.

I’m leaning toward the Febi or Geba. I like the peace of mind I get from a metal impeller (current pump is metal, but no idea who made it).

Get the Stewart pump. Here’s the difference.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, I was confused at one point about the difference between the plastic (terrible) pump and the new composite pump.

I actually replaced my composite pump with the metal pump pictured here (and then replaced that one with the Stewart).

It’s pretty clear when you get them side by side which is plastic (not mine - from the Google).

Kinja'd!!!

If you decide not to go the Stewart route, I have both the composite one and the metal impeller version still. If you’re in Dallas or Austin you could have one of them.

I would go with OEM just be sure. I’m pretty certain the PO of my car replaced the pump with one of the off brands within the last 2 years, and the bearing is already on its way out. That said this is for an m30, and water pumps aren’t too difficult a task on bmws.

Got whichever one Turner sells. Definitely get the water pump pulley tool! I damaged move trying to hold it with vice grips

My maintenance schedule shows replacement every two years, and I’ve got about another two years left, so I’ll see how it goes.

I can’t see dropping $200 on the Stewart pump when I only expect to have this for another couple years. That, and if I do keep the car longer I can get three of the Febi or Geba pumps for the cost of the Stewart, and I have yet to see if a Stewart pump will last 150,000 miles (assuming 50k each for the off-brand pump).

Also, I really appreciate the offer, but I’m on the east coast and shipping would probably cost the same as me buying one from ECS.

If my pump is the issue I’ll be getting an aluminum pulley to replace the plastic one, but I’ll pick up that goofy tool as well.

I wasn’t aware your maintenence schedule would be only two years. In that case definately go for it.

I did the pump as a reliability fix. My plastic one was still fine. I put a new plastic pulley on... Wouldn’t the aluminum only help if all of the pulleys are aluminum?

Fair enough!

Too bad I don’t make regular trips to NJ anymore. Well, too bad for you at least. I sure don’t regret getting out of that constant work travel.

E38 owner, I cursed a lot while doing the water pump.

Two years/60k miles with my driving apparently, as it appears the one I had put on in 2013 is leaking.

The issue with the plastic pulley was that during maintenance it could crack and over time it becomes brittle and susceptible to breaking. The aluminum pulley is not prone to breaking. Plus, the cost for the URO aluminum pulley is the same (or less) than a replacement composite pulley from BMW.

It does matter, and it matters a lot. I think Geba is the preferred brand for this, but I could be wrong. I could ask my friend’s shop in a couple of hours possibly though.

There is some brand (unfortunately I can’t quote exactly which) that is just overall poor quality and a bad impeller design, and another which is top notch. I’ll ask when I get a chance, they’ll probably know right away.

Most of the metal impeller pumps have what looks like tack-welded sheetmetal impellers. The Geba is cast (as you can see above). Any info would be appreciated.
