I’m assuming due to having to conform to US emissions legislation as an afterthought on an already production ready vehicle.

Similar to the (mandatory) red rear fog light and amber indicators on this US market vehicle registered in Europe. You won’t see such design afterthoughts on a normal vehicle here.
