It seems like all but a handful of Opponauts have brought home new vehicles in the last few weeks. When I bought !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , it made me think back to my history. I’ve really only owned 3 vehicles that could be considered sporty: an ‘87 CRX, an ‘87 Integra, and a ‘12 Fiat 500 Sport. Of those 3, only the Fiat had a manual, and none had more than 113 hp. But boy, there sure have been a whole lotta 4-door beigemobiles. Let’s see: ‘80 Pontiac Phoenix 5-door, ‘83 Chevy Celebrity, ‘91 Mercury Sable, ‘93 Geo Prizm, ‘01 Oldsmobile Alero, ‘91 VW Passat, ‘98 Buick LeSabre, and now my ‘13 Kia Optima. I’ve only had 2 cars that had 200 hp or more, and that’s the Optima (200) and the Buick (205). Clearly, I’m terrible at applying my automotive enthusiasm to my actual vehicular purchasing habits.

So, what has been your most commonly purchased type of vehicle?

In the short time I’ve been driving and have had a license...all my cars have been Honda/Acura (01 Integra, 98 civic hatch, 03 TL-S). My TL is the first car I’ve owned to have over 200hp...also the first and (hopefully last) that requires 91+ octane

Nope, no bias here....

I guess you could say the only trend is inline engines. The Mazda was the first I went out of my way to choose. The rest were products of circumstance. We had a lot of v8s in my family but my mom never let me drive the fast ones regularly when I was younger. It's probably why I'm alive today.

I’ve only owned three vehicles. In order if purchase, a ‘91 Jeep Comanche, a ‘96 Lada Niva, and a ‘93 Jeep Cherokee. All three are sitting in my back yard, although the XJ is half stripped and will get chopped up and scrapped soon as I only got it for parts for the MJ.

So I guess my type is cheap 4x4? Purchase prices for all three combined add up to $4000.

Although I still drive them spiritedly on road too. The Niva is pretty light and turns in nicely (compared to the average fwd American car) and everything's manual on it, so it's not bad to drive. The MJ also does reasonably well, at least for a nose-heavy pickup with two solid axles...

I had made sure it had oil before I left and after it happened there was almost none in the crankcase and very little came out when the rod went. There hadn’t been any smoke either. Fortunately we found a $500 used engine and plunked it in, and went on like nothing had happened.

Great topic. Hmm. I’m going to have to write them out in order and see. I’m excluding parts cars and project cars that never got off the ground—only cars that got driven fairly often (but not necessarily only DDs):

1978 Datsun 200SX

1980 Saab 900GLE

1990 Honda Accord

1989 BMW 325iX

1987 Audi 4000CS Quattro

1986 Volkswagen Quantum Syncro

1971 Dodge Dart Swinger

1980 Toyota Longbed pickup

1987 Mercedes 300D Turbo

1980 Mercedes 280SLC (Euro)

2000 Volkswagen New Beetle TDI

1996 Isuzu Trooper

2001 Chevy Suburban 1500

1987 Lincoln Mark VII LSC

2004 Chevy Suburban 1500 (another one)

2002 Toyota Camry SE

1987 Mercedes 300D Turbo (another one)

1999 Lexus LS400

Ummm. Sports sedans? German and ‘80s? German, ‘80s, and a little weird? (There’s that string of rare AWD cars early on and then the diesels and the Euro 6-cylinder 107...)

Glutton for punishment with rare moments of sanity (the Accord and the LS400)?

Maybe it all started with the 200SX, the runt of the Nissan/Datsun 1970s sports car family, with the engine and drivetrain of the 510 but with a rear live axle, a dogleg 5-speed, and as homely as a Z-car was beautiful:

Crossovers have AWD available. The Soul does not. It is a tall hatchback version of the Rio.

Since when has AWD been a requirement for crossovers?

Crossover are simply tall, car-based hatchbacks/wagons. The term exists pretty much exclusively to differentiate them from the tall, truck-based hatchback/wagons we call SUVs.

SUVs tend to be RWD with optional 4WD, but you can’t get 4WD on all of them. Similarly, CUVs tend to be FWD with optional AWD, but you can’t get AWD on all of them.

1st place is VW busses with 24 between 1957 and 1982 (only one was a vanagon)

2nd place is a tie between VW beetles and Ford F series pickups with 5 each.

That’s a lot of VW Buses.

I’m convinced that one of my friends is trying to own every Miata ever produced at least once.

The only commonality I have with my four cars is that they’re all manuals. With the exception of my old rx-7, all were 4 cylinders. With the exception of the Ford Contour SVT, all were Japanese. With the exception of the Subaru Outback, all were quirky/unique. With the exception of the Scion xB, all got <25 mpg.

kinda boring actually..

1970 VW Beetle

1977 VW Kombi Wagon

1986 Honda Civic DX hatch

1988 Nissan Sentra

1990 Nissan p/u, (base, 2wd, std cab, no rear bumper..)

1992 Honda Acord LX Coupe

2001 Honda Civic DX Coupe

2005 Nissan Altima 2.5sl

2009 Mazda3 2.3 sport 5dr hatch

All manuals except for the Altima - do I get points for that? The only one I really disliked was that 01 Civic, slow (but didn’t get all that great mileage,) 1st model year teething issues, crappy brakes, wonky handling...)

It’s good to not be trapped in a car you hate. The old Acura Integra I had was a hateful little shitbox. When I got rid of it, it went to someone who used it in a demolition derby. It deserved it.

Every actual crossover I’ve yet encountered or researched has AWD as an option. If it’s not an option, by definition, it's not a crossover, just a tall car-based hatchback or wagon. For instance, a Ford C-Max is a tall Focus-based hatchback, in essence, with only 2WD available. The Escape is also a tall Focus-based hatchback, but does offer AWD, and is therefore a crossover.
