A. VF-1 is better because it’s more F-14 looking

Gerwalk mode is cool, and perfectly practical in the context of the show. I also like that it’s called ‘gerwalk’ mode.
I do love the F-14-ness of the V-1/0, and the VF-25 has some of that charm as well, but forward-swept wings and it having been the principle Valkyrie of the show that got me into Macross mean that the VF-19 will always be unmatched, for me.

While it doesn’t have as much attention and wasn’t deployed as often in canon...the VF-4 Lightning III is undoubtedly the best.
I’d also place the VF-1 with FAST packs over it (the 19’s packs sucked), as well as the YF-21 if we’re counting prototypes. The ‘Fire’ Valkyrie from Macross 7 really hurts the 19.

This reminds me of this great YT video that is just a ~20 minute compilation of some of the best “Itano Circus” moments in anime. I think some people refer to it as the “Macross Missile Massacre” but “Itano Circus” is the original name.

Heh, I love the fire Valkyrie. I’ve never really paid much attention to the VF-4, honestly. It has the name of possibly my favourite fighter plane of all time - though probably not the ‘Lightning’ you’re thinking of - and I do rather like the look of it, from the pictures I just saw.
I used to be quite keen on the VF-17 Nightmare, but the utterly weaksauce mass production VF-171s from Frontier kinda ruined it for me.

Going off memory here....VF-4 was designed to be an all out bad-ass space fighter first and would still hold its own against 2 or 3 generations newer in vacuum fights. It lacked maneuverability in atmosphere and was super expensive as its downsides. It was an all out space superiority fighter. They produced the lame-o, cheaper VF-5000 Mirage for atmospheric combat. Budget constraints lead UN Spacey to pull production of VF-4 and upgrade the 5000 to multirole while the boring ass VF-11 finished development. The lack of promised performance by the more expensive than planned VF-11 program was what lead to the YF-19/21/X-9 competition.
Macross likes to draw its background/world building from real life...haha
