Here are some of the interesting cars that showed up to kill cones at the Dixie GO station in Mississauga on Sunday. Naturally, the parking lot was dominated by Subieyotas, S2000s and Miatas of all ages in various states of tune but there was lots of variety in people’s weapon of choice.

The GTV6 above was a bit rough around the edges and had more bodyroll than the Costa Concordia but was being flogged within an inch of its life and that’s awesome. The LTD Crown Vic below was majestic and had a lot of tire. The driver was a Jalopnik fan wearing his ‘Lock Me Mama Like a Wagon Wheel’ shirt, which I complimented him on.

There were several other large(ish) sedans including a brand new CTS V-sport, TL SH-AWD, and a G8 with headers and a couple of other modifications that sounded fantastic.

Toaster. Driven by one of the organizers if I recall and decently quickly too.

British manufacturers were well represented with a Lotus Elise (Exige?), Triumph Spitfire, and 2 Elans.

There was also this TR6 has the LT1 and 6-speed from a C4 Corvette. Yes, it was quick.

This homebuilt monster started as a Miata, I think. It is now turbocharged and definitely one of the fastest cars at the event, if not the fastest.

Very well actually, 6th overall, half a second off the top time behind 2 miatas, that élan coupe, an s2000 and that homebuilt machine. Like most people (except me) he had good rubber on the car but it was impressive to watch him control the car - the rear end was definitely giving him trouble. There was a tightening off-rhythm slalom at the end of the course that he got a tank slapper going a couple of times when I was watching. That rear suspension was doing him no favours at all.

Speaking of which, how’s yours coming along? Is it going to be less skittish under braking?

Damn, are they that pricey? Does the coupe make up a bigger chunk of that value? I’d never seen one before so I imagine they’re even more rare than a regular one.

There was a third élan, actually, but it wasn’t competing. It was probably in the best shape of the three from what I saw, possibly a fresh(er) restoration in a very nice slightly pale yellow. Unfortunately it left halfway through the event, before I took these pictures, otherwise I’d have had a shot with all three.

A lot less skittish :) I’m about halfway through my revised suspension setup at the moment. I’m making a virtual lower a-arm that mounts under the chassis, giving zero bump steer (unlike the rotoflex setup) and zero camber change (much better that drastically positive on the swing axles and mildly positive on the rotoflex).

At the moment I’ve got the mounts welded, but not drilled yet (don’t skimp on drill bits, cheap ones just blunt before you’ve even finished drilling one hole). I’ve also got most of the little bits of tube machined to shape and half of them tapped so I can fit threaded adjusters to adjust camber and toe.

Lots of little bits progressing forwards, but nothing big enough to post about :S that should change soon though. Next paycheck will hopefully be Quaife LSD time!

Yup, look a little more closely at the copper coloured one. :) The guy was flogging it hard too. It ended up 4th fastest on the day. It had a decently wide set of tires for a car of that size, I’m not sure on the suspension setup but the engine sounded highly tuned (might’ve been swapped, I should’ve had a peek under the hood). Good driver as well, that car danced through the tight slalom.

Nice. Looking forward to seeing more of the progress.

I know the feeling on buying drill bits. One thing I’ve noticed though is that on bigger bits (say bigger than 8 or 10mm or so), drilling a pilot hole with a smaller bit really saves the point on the final big bit and keeps it sharp longer. Killed a 19mm bit learning that lesson though.

The Spitfire above definitely had a swing axle rear suspension setup. The camber change under braking was scary enough watching from outside the car, I imagine it was pretty, say, lively from the perspective of the drivers seat.

Yeah pilot holes drilled but it’s the outside edge of the drill that’s blunting. I think it might be spinning too fast, apparently with bigger drill bits they like to go slower...

Halfway done now with a grinding wheel resharpening the drills a couple of times per hole :)

Currently indoors trying to figure out how on earth I’m going to be able to fit a rear ARB onto this suspension arrangement:

Could you use the leaf spring in an anti-roll arangement, similar to how the corvette does? Alternatively, the spring pivot on the spindle looks like the most available spot of you can put a clevis (on the end of the arb links) around it and a longer bolt through. The bar would have to be mounted pretty high, likely similar or just above the leaf spring but that’s all I can think of. I don’t know if that would interfere with the body mounting on the chassis though but its all I can think of right now.

I’ll have to look up Corvette rear suspensions, not 100% on their detail.

Yeah I’m thinking of attaching it to the spring mount, but running a long dropling down to the bottom of the vertical link and then having the ARB mount on the underside of the chassis. There’s certainly no hardpoints to mount it higher up.

The other option would be to mount it on the opposite end of the bolt for the shock (usually taken by a radius arm mount, but will be unused in mine like on the picture above). Would probably need 14” wheels to give clearance for a droplink though...

Give this link a read for the anti-roll effect of the corvette leafspring: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corvette_… scroll down to the Properties section. Basically if you mount the leafspring with two widely spaced pivots on the chassis an upward movement on one end of the spring will also force the other end of the spring up as well, like an antiroll bar.

The spring point sounds like a good option.

Yeah that shock mount would be really tight if you want to mount the arb low. Less so if you mount it higher with a long droplink, which sounds unfeasible.

Aaah, very clever.

Now I’ve got a rough idea of setup, I just need to find an ARB of the right shape. I think I’ll need to head to a scrappy’s with a measuring tape (or start crawling under everyone’s car at work...).

Also, I reckon going to 14” wheels might be a good idea, although it would mean switching to Minilites which are too damn common for my liking...
