Take a good idea and ruin it with delays, bureaucratic incompetence and a dab of bad luck, this is how you make a modern day Hawker-Siddeley Trident.

Back in the late 1950’s, the jet era was in full swing and the jetliner industry was blooming. Everyone was trying to get their part of the flying pie. Boeing was having great success with its 707, and so was Douglas with its equally awesome DC-8 flagship. There was a lot of demand for a smaller jet for long continental routes. Decided not to face another failure a la DHC Comet, the British government mandated state-owned British European Airways to build a narrow-body short to medium range jetliner, and undercut Boeing that was planning the 727, its direct-competitor-to-be.

At around the same moment, the government decided to reorganized the British air industry, which resulted id delays in the HS Trident program. These delays caused some concerned for potential client who opted en masse for the Boeing 727. Far from being a bad plane, the HS Trident failed because of the bad perception. Boeing sold almost 2,000 727 while HS only sold 117 aircraft, many of them to the British government.

Meanwhile, the Bombardier Cseries is finally getting ready. The first airplanes will be delivered in February 2016, almost 3 years late and 2.5 Billion over budget. By all means, the Cseries is a great airplane, but the perception is far from being good. Firm orders are only at 250 and no new orders have been placed in a while. Its direct competitors, the Boeing 737-8 and the Airbus A320Neo are selling like hot cakes during an African famine.

Can the delays and issues that plagued the Cseries development make it a monumental flop ?

Does the CSeries share any commonality with other Bombardier aircraft? Because if airlines are already heavily invested in Boeing and Airbus and Embraer, there’s little chance they will take on an entirely new line of jets. By all accounts, it’s a good plane, but, as you say, too late to the show. Along similar lines, is anybody outside of Eastern Europe buying the Sukhoi SuperJet?

No it has nothing to do with their line of regional / business jets, it’s a clean sheet design.

Right now it looks like it is Windows Phone. Good product, but late to the game. They would need to do some special dancing to get the big players interested.
