This data set doesn’t just look at sales volume. We all know that it’d be a map full of F-150s that we’ve all seen before. They’re looking for outliers here... states where a car’s demand is highly disproportionate to its demand nationwide. The info makes for an interesting look at regional automotive preferences with several big surprises and some that fit stereotypes perfectly.
You won’t be shocked to find out that the Nissan Xterra sells well in Colorado, or that New England loves the Volvo V60 Cross Country and Subaru Impreza. But did you know that all 4 people that bought a new Kia K900 were in North Carolina, or that Arizona and Nevada are Fiat 500L territory?
Lots of interesting bits like this: In the District of Columbia, the Jaguar XK sells at 752 percent the national average. Four premium vehicles, including the Jaguar XK, Aston Martin Vantage, Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Jaguar XJ, all have market shares in the District of Columbia more than six times their national averages.

Q: Why does the Smart Fortwo even still exist?
A: Almost exclusively because of the hipster population in Portland.

“In Oregon three sub-compact cars, including the Smart Fortwo, Mercedes-Benz B-Class and Chevrolet Spark, each sell at a rate more than three times the national average.”

I was wondering who was purchasing all the Fiat 500Ls. Well done Arizona.
Edit: and Nevada. Nothing says rugged desert environment like an ugly Italian box.

Imagine that they have actually found something NY and TX have in common, a love for Cadillac Escalade EXTs. Go figure.

Arizona and Nevada are 500L territory. Not California, where an EV would be the car of choice...

Never thought I’d see a statistic that NY and Texas had in common.

I believe this is the only thing NJ has in common with Kansas.

I’d guess that almost all of them in NY are being used by car services.

More likely a result of retirees. 10-15 years ago, I imagine those would have been the Scion xB. The Viagra Fiat commercial probably resonated with that set.

Possibly, since you can’t buy a new LeSabre anymore.

The LeSabre wasn’t really a car retirees bought, it was a car people owned when they retired... Cheap cars with deep discounts are what retirees on fixed incomes buy.

I’m pretty sure the Smart Fortwo number is skewed heavily by per hour rental places, because most of the ones I see are for car2go.

Funny I don’t see them on the road that often. I would have figured Prius because of Santa Fe or Nissan Titan/Toyota Tundra since trucks are everywhere here.

Good point, it just seems like I see most retires with the LeSabre round these parts.
