1966 Joker was best Joker. I think I would have enjoyed having a beer with Cesar Romero. He must have had quite a sense of humor to play along with this show.

Some say he was quite the joker.

Dude. Don’t try to lie and tell me he wasn’t actually surfing. Your lies hurt my feelings.

My favorite thing was that he refused to shave off his’stache...so they put the makeup over, making him look that much creepier.

TIL That his uncle was Jose Marti.
Fun fact, he used to live in the house my wife was raised in

I grew up coming home from elementary school and hoping to catch that show on UHF re-runs in the afternoon with my brother (or Starblazers, that was awesome, too). True, I loved Batman and Robin, but I always thought The Joker was kind of cool. When the Batman movies came out in the 90s, I had to... “readjust”... my thoughts about the character. But, little-kid me liked Cesar and the others, and I think would have had nightmares from 90s Batman cast/plot/characters/cinematography, etc. Anyway, thank you for the happy memories, I needed them.

Then we must be about the same age. I, too, remember UHF, and was a huge Starblazers fan. I had a major crush on Julie Newmar as Catwoman.

“The first oncoming thrust of manhood.” Holy innuendo, Batman! Yvonne Craig passed away just recently. RIP, Batgirl.

I’m 41, FWIW. Even as a little kid watching the shows, you could still get a sense when Batgirl or Catwoman made an appearance that there was something (awesome) else at work. I was in Okinawa for work in spring of 2014, and my coworker and I went to a toy store (Japanese toy stores are amazing). He was looking for a particular Japan-only video game controller (found it, for 1/4 of the US eBay prices). There was a fantastic Space Battleship Yamato kit for sale there, would have finished out at a couple feet long, for around US$60. I couldn’t figure out how to get it home without crushing it. I travel very light, with just a backpack, and the compression straps would have killed it. But, there are some online options. Maybe I can order and build one with my son in a few years, if he’s in to it. I really wanted an OS Giken head for my Z, but the last time an original one went up for sale there, it was about US $25,000. So, that wasn’t too likely.
Note: You can get the entire Starblazers series (US, english version) on DVDs, but it’s hideously expensive (like $500 for the set, last I checked).

Pretty close, I’m 48 (49 in November). I’ve got one DVD of Starblazers that I picked up probably 15 years ago. I watched some of it a while ago, and I had forgotten how melodramatic it was. As a kid, I was just into the cool space ships. I’ve never been that into anime, not to the point of learning about it and knowing styles, genres, etc. But it’s clear that Starblazers is working out some postwar, anti-nuclear cultural angst that I never realized as a kid.

Yeah, I’m not a big anime fan, either. Starblazers was just an awesome cartoon when I was a kid. You’re right, it really is funny now to see all those other aspects that zoomed right over the head of 6-year-old me.
