This is my car. It’s an ‘07 Ford Focus with about 115K miles on it so it’s done some time on the road. I got it on January ‘15 and about 2 months ago it started having issues. It first started with the O/D Off like coming on and the car would kinda “skip” every time I put the gas down from a stop. Then out of nowhere the RPMs would go up but it wouldn’t pick up speed. It actually slowed down and would eventually stop. We sent it to a shop where they pulled an old fuse out an everything was fine. Then last week it happened again. It would go past first gear then RPM goes up but it just slows down. Sent to a shop again and the guy pretty much says the transmission is borked and it’ll cost $5,000 to replace. The car itself is like $7,000, and we have nobody to help us do the installation ourselves. Is my car basically dead?

Limp it in to your nearest dealer and use it as a trade in. Hopefully they won’t notice the trans issue..... no I didn’t just tell you to do that.

Not worth repairing it at that price. Honestly, cars like those are replaceable.

$5,000 is too much to replace a transmission. You should get a couple more quotes. A new trans is $1,000-ish, and $4,000 in labor would be something like 40 hours, or literally an entire work week.

5 grand for a new transmission sounds fishy. Very fishy. I’d check to find a Jasper rebuild dealer near you. Their rebuilt transmissions have a 3 year 100k mile warranty. Many years ago my mom had a ‘96 Chrysler Town & Country. The transmissions on these were notoriously unreliable. When hers went out, she got a Jasper rebuild, and that warranty was good to have because the rebuild died within the warranty period and she got another one for free. I blame that more on the shitty Chrysler design than the Jasper rebuild.

Sounds like your car is dead.
Ford Transmissions are the weakest point of a Ford (speaking as a Ford guy).
The last GOOD Ford transmissions were the C4 and the C6...which were designed back i n the 60’s I believe. The C4 is in my 68 Montego. They used them into the 90’s I believe.
My daily driver Milan has a Mazda sourced transmission I believe, so I should be safe....

Pretty sure it’s the M5OD, so yes.

Agreed here, a re manufactured transaxle for this thing shouldn’t be more than $700-$1000 and labor should be another grand at best.

Are you talking about the Milan?
6-speed
Aisin
TF-80
automatic
6-speed Ford 6F35 automatic
Wiki says it’s one of these 2. V6 Autos were all 6 speeds.
EDIT
It’s the Aisin.
6F35 was a joint GM/Ford that didn’t go into Mercurys until 2010. My car’s an 07 so, it’s the Aisin TF-80.
I’m set.

Check the output speed sensor. That could be the culprit. I had the same issue with my Infiniti. It’s about a $50 part and could be the issue. Check to see if your car is throwing a CEL code P0720. http://engine-codes.com/p0720.html It could be as simple as that.

Not necessarily shitty design (well, not with the transmission itself at least), but the deciding to use transmission built for car use in a van. Too small for what they were using it for.

Stupid question, but have you tried resetting the ECU?
I had something similar happen on a CVPI I owned; the car would slip into neutral (I think) if I tried to do a 4-3-4 shift too quickly. Once I reset the computer and avoided the type of hard kick down, it was fine.
Changed the fluid recently? Trans filter if it has one?

Wrong thread. Sorry.
The M5OD is the manual for the ranger.

Yeah I was going to say...thats mainly a truck transmission.

Shit I’ve done that.
*lacks shame*
Car drove great once it was warmed up. I mean, it needed brakes too but hey - he drove it.

I had done a valve body mod to my Neon (shh) and it was a lease... when I put it back to stock to return it I screwed something up and it would up-shift early no matter what but I figured no one would notice unless hammering on it and who hammers on lease returns?

Like Pary-vi said, $5,000 for a transmission is way out of line. A rebuilt transmission and labor should be $1,500 to $2,000, with about $800 - $1,000 of that being for the unit itself. You may be able to find something cheaper at the local “Pick & Pull”, but you gamble on overall longevity. Then again, it’s an 8 year old Focus, so I wouldn’t sink too much money into it.

Hahaha. If it looks legit and you drove it in, no one.
I also cleared the check engine codes on my old blazer when i traded it in. It was for an 02 sensor and a small evap leak, both took about 2 days to bring the light back on.
I cleared it an hour before going to the dealer lol

I and an 01 escort that would pull this BS occasionally, it was so occasional that I never did fix it before getting rid of the car for an unrelated issue.
If you rev it a couple of times will it go into gear?
Also, what engine does it have?
