I wonder how long I can be “catching up on email?’

About two days, give or take.

I have a work iphone, which means:
(a) There is no such thing as “vacation” in the truest sense.
(b) Email catch-up is limited to a couple hours the day you get back
Next interview, I’m asking for no laptop and no iphone. I miss the days where people would help do your work while you’re out, and that when you get back there are actual surprises. At least that way you don’t dread your job while you’re on vacation...

We have the ability to check email through a webmail client on any internet enabled device. Some of my coworkers do this while on vacation. Honestly I was cleaned up in about an hour because I made sure to not get entangled into anything for the last week before vacation.

Great, see you guys on Thursday!

I had my boss resort to texting me when I didn’t answer emails within an hour or so (at the beach, no less). Yeah, our dynamic around here is messed up.

I was away from work for 6 days and now I regret it. My email has piled up but now I have bigger worries than reading them.
Somehow our exhaust emission measurement system has received weird network drive settings and our data saving system was out of ordering during my absence. Other guys tried to solve the problem and now the measurement data for one week has gone missing. Despite the connection problems the data shouldn’t vanish but still it seems to be gone.

Ah, you’re missing the point. I cleaned them all up in like an hour but I’m screwing around under the guise of cleaning up email.

Ouch! I came back to a half empty office. Now I’m going to take a long lunch because my boss isn’t here.

Best answer and probably closest to truth.

I have always wanted, but have never had the balls, to set an out of office along the lines of:
Thank you for your email, please note that I am currently out of the office and will be deleting all emails upon my return. If your request is important please resend once I have returned.
But I would give you 2 days. If they don’t buy it just adopt the Costanza method and look pissed off all the time.

Ah, I get it now.
I do the same thing. “Nah sorry, I can’t come to that meeting, I’m still catching up on emails from being off last week.”
