Until this car came up on local Craigslist, I did not know Thunderbirds were available with such an incredible manifestation of 1950’s American excess. Those pipes!

Extensions of the standard exhausts to clear the bumper extension. The mufflers are within the length of the body, so I think those are just insulating cans over the pipes.

I can't recall ever seeing the exhaust above the bumper on a car like this. It seems like a lot of work when you could have kept them underneath.

Here’s a standard ‘Bird for comparison. In an era of jet-age style above all, this kind of thing was commonplace.
