I’ve always loved those. Never driven them (or heaven forbid work on one). But if I had one, I would have a mechanic on standby.

did you have a peek inside to see if it was the 6-speed?

test drove one of these once with a 6-speed. it was quite impressive. until it wouldn’t start back up when we needed to fill up at the gas station. i’d still get one if the right offer came along.

while GT cars, i feel like this and the 928 have a bit of mis-matched looks to behavior with their aggressive styling coupled to an automatic (most of them cars were autos). the styling of the contemporaneous XJS and SEC however suit an automatic.

They’re so pretty. Considering it’s essentially two M20’s welded together, I’m not so sure these things deserve their reputation for being shop queens. Yea, imma be that guy.

i think its less that the cars themselves are any more unreliable than a similar era top-of-the-line european car, than that when something does go wrong its 2x as expensive, and takes 2x the time as with a 6 cylinder bmw.

not at all discounting the potential for electrical issues for a car like this, as computer controlled systems were just getting into consumer cars when this car debuted. and being a flagship for bmw, it had to have them all.

I think I’d get a big GT car like an 8 series or a 928 in an auto. They aren’t super tossable, to be honest.

850, if the stick-on V12 badge is to be believed.

Oh beautiful, no doubt, reliable? eh, not the 850 with the v12. and it’s shitty because it’s not really the engine or trans that are faulty. they are both great and even wonderfully reliable in other applications. the issue is the electrics on those cars. which is a major problem with 850 due to how compact everything is stuffed into them it makes working on them a bitch. which drives up costs and increase margin of error that could result in more problems down the road.

the 840 how ever is actually pretty darn solid. really the 850 dragged all the 8’s down with it in reputation. which is a shame, cause not even every 850 has issues but with greater than 60% of then leaving the factory with faulty electrical BS it’s hard to stick up for them.

totally understand the point of “tossable”

i’ve been in the market for a bit. drove about 7 different 928s over the last 6 months. autos and 5speeds. i agree they’re not spry, but the control the 5-speed allows you is really appreciated. the 928 auto starts in 2nd gear if you dont floor it. the 5 speed is more of a muscle car with control of acceleration. and its definitely not a “downshifting-and-upshifting-around-the-twisties” nimble sports car. i had only been on 5-10 minute drives with the autos, but i can see how one might miss a lot of the excitement in the 4-6k rpm range.

accordingly, i did this, with a 5 speed:

Kinja'd!!!

also, i must admit, its not the most smooth or clever 5 speed i’ve driven.

exactly! fuel control intakes, throttle, dual fuel senders, ect... it’s an electrical nightmare stuffed into the smallest space they could. it’s an awful car to work on. the 850, the v8 840 was not as bad, shame they didn’t make a 6cyl one.

theres a reason you’ll find hand full or more of LS swapped 850’s but tons of stock 840’s

Yea, combination of being tech-heavy and cutting edge. It really is like two engines welded together, each cylinder bank gets its own everything!
