Still very much want.

Blurrrghhhh

For why? We have them as vauxhalls not brilliant, not bad.

I don’t want a Yaris, a Matrix has two more doors than I need, I love hatchbacks, falls within my future budget, manual, and I kind of want to own something unique and unsuspecting (only sold one year here in the States).

I only ever liked than car with the panoramic windscreen. Thought it looked great but other than that the car was, meh.
Though the Astra J got it as well as the Astra H.

i’m all about these except for the doorline. That bothers me to no end.

I did about ten driving lessons in one, everything just felt wrong and the interior is pretty nasty compared to the competition. They have a pretty shitty reliability record too.

It sold well here because it was cheap and from a well known brand, but there are better choices. In the oppressive hatch hating USA I can understand the appeal. It is the same platform as a cobalt.

A wise friend of mine has a saying “Vauxhalls are shit, don’t buy one.” He has a way with words.

I've always sorta liked these, but the interior is cheap and ugly. If i were looking for a 2-door hatch with a manual I'd stretch the budget a little bit and look for a pre-facelift C30.

Oh really? le sigh. When looking at reviews online, I get a small mixed bag, because again, we only got the 1.8 and only for one year. I really like the way it looks but I haven’t even test driven one because few exist at all.

Oh I’m positive there are far superior vehicles out there — but as you can surmise I’m not a gentlemen who looks for luxury and anything is probably more cozy than my current DD.
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:03 |

I agree, I liked them too. That’s why I bought a Volvo C30 lol

I find it funny how in Europe these are considered below average in their segment at the time, but here they were for the most part above average in their segment. Which I guess wasn’t too hard when you look at the competition...

One of my least favourite things was the 1.7 diesel engine in the thing, so at least you avoid that. It’s not a disaster of a car or anything it’s just really dull and feels like it’s built to a price even moreso than other similar priced stuff. Vauxhall/Opel in general have a habit of making stuff that’s just dull.
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:09 |

Right, but I am a guy who likes Tercels and pickups, I mean, have you been in the interior of an ‘89 Toyota pickup? I had to stare at that thing for 4 years.
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:10 |

But it’s just a case of getting the most out of your money. If you’re okay with sketchy build quality and dull interior you may as well buy a Cobalt.
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:11 |

Yeah, there are slim pickin’s for people who want three doors (and not a Yaris) In a perfect world, I would still have my ‘96 Civic which I’m sure is probably still superior to an ‘08 Saturn. But ownership was kind of a PITA. I would be invisible in an Astra.
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:12 |

Agreed. My buddy had one when it was new and it was a cheap plastic nightmare
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:18 |

Yeah they’re not a great place to be.
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:19 |

But the Cobalt doesn’t get a hatch. And it doesn’t look as good. My liking of cars can be irrational as the next guy. Maybe prices will drop and I can find one on the cheap. Or maybe when I actually drive one I’ll hate it. Who knows
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:20 |

I want an Astra GTC with saddle brown interior as my first car
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:21 |

Actually, if these are anything like my mom’s ‘08 Vue was, they’re pretty nice vehicles. Not quite the plastic panel econoboxes Saturn gained their reputation on.

Yeah I can identify with the strange wants to be fair haha.
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:28 |

That would be a tough purchase for me to justify, though I do like them quite a bit.

My sister had an earlier Astra F.
Briefly.

I guess I was either unaware how much Astra values have tanked or Volvos are just cheap in Texas. What is the budget? Here is a 2009 C30 T5 M6 cloth interior with only 36,000 miles asking under $10k. http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/ctd/5185217676…
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:51 |

I briefly considered an Astra VXR, insurance was a killer and it wasn’t the right image for a young guy, went for a similar vintage GTI instead.
![]() 08/23/2015 at 16:56 |

The budget is fluid and uncertain because my next purchase ranks in priorities as follows:
1. wife’s new car
2 through 15. more home improvement
16. finish garage renovation
17. Winter vacation
.
.
.
47. Zoidberg’s car
![]() 08/23/2015 at 17:01 |

Sounds about like my list. So for now I keep driving the old Hyundai hey-at-least-its-a-manual-wagon crapmobile while looking at more interesting things I’ll never have on Craigslist. But hey by the time weget to 47 maybe you a C30 will only be a few grand!

Someone that works at the Wal-Mart by me has one, I kind of have to agree with you. They are a good looking car.

That windscreen is awesome! I don’t think Australia got that one
![]() 08/24/2015 at 01:28 |

It’s one of those great options that not many took up (certainly not in the U.K.).
![]() 08/24/2015 at 23:02 |

I’m going to check every Astra I see from now on to see if it has that roof. Thanks for that.
I reckon I’ll have the same success rate as my checking every old blue WRX to see if it’s a 22B.

Looks like
it’s not available in Australia, at least not at the moment. I has a sad

I must admit I’ve only ever seen one in person and that was an Astra H at a dealership.

I can’t find it on the Vauxhall website either but they do exist.
I like the Holden logo and the Vauxhall logo. The Opel logo is just bland.
![]() 08/25/2015 at 03:34 |

That gives me hope that there are some in Australia! :D
I think the Opel one is okay, sort of snazzy. Not over-done. People have started badging their Holden Astras as Opels over here since Opel started selling cars here. It’s crazy, Opel pulled out because they couldn’t sell any cars (sold less than 1000), yet somehow they have “brand rep”.
Try the HSV one, it’s like an angry Holden one with a helmet!

If it’s just the likes of the panoramic roof you can also get it on a Citroen C4 Picasso.
2007 C4 Picasso
New C4 Picasso.

We do have those. But lots of cars come with panoramic roofs, Audi Q7 and Mitsubishi Delica (sort of!) spring to mind. Or VW Eos.
I do love that sort of thing (part of the reason I’ve had so many cars with glass t-tops), but the Astra roof is sort of special. I’ve never seen a windscreen that just melded into roof like that, without even a cross member!
I guess the Picassos above sort of do it, maybe to a lesser extent. Maybe I expect them to have big windscreens anyway.
![]() 08/25/2015 at 06:46 |

My neighbour has got an Eos that I clean. It’s nice and all but that beam.
Ye’, I like the whole thing of the glass coming right back without a whole beam running across a regular windscreen top.

You’ve got me looking on Autotrader now. Found 8 Astra H’s from
Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTi 16v SRi Sport Hatch 3dr
£2,850
Vauxhall Astra 2.0 16v VXR Arctic Edition 3dr
£9,475
![]() 08/25/2015 at 07:08 |

Definitely. Even painting them black looks heaps better, I’ve seen it done on Zeds.
It’s just a visual trick of course, but you do get the effect of the glass section running the length of the car.
The b-pillar on the door in between the two windows comes black from factory, so it’s not even that heinous.

3000 pounds! That’s cheap as chips. I tried searching for Astra + panoramic in Australia, no results.

I’ve just looked at 329 Holden Astras on Autotrader.au. Not a single one. I guess it either was never an option or nobody bought one.
Though I have learned that the Vauxhall Astra H here is called the Holden Astra AH there.

Ooh, I wonder what the A stands for :P
There’s an autotrader au? Usually we use Carsales.com.au.
