How far is too far? I think completely changing a vehicle’s drivetrain layout may be too far.

The TC is based on the Avensis which had optional 4wd, hence floorpans for 4wd can be found. That’s how they got away with it I believe. Either way I love these kind of crazy builds.

But in AWD versions of FWD cars, the rear is driven by a tiny, spindly driveshaft designed to handle at most 40% of the engine’s power. RWD conversions still require large modifications because the tunnel is often not large enough to accommodate a full sized driveshaft.

But even cars that were RWD stock in the sport usually have heavy trans tunnel modifications and swapped diffs and driveshafts. The sport is meant to include a diverse range of cars. Seeing a 3 rotor twin turbo Miata running among GTRs and high powered former econoboxes facing up against FRSs is part of the fun.

But at that point you might as well just drop the body onto a custom built chassis.

Suspension mounting points, much of the floor pan, basically everything between the strut towers is stock. They even have to modify the stock rear subframe to accept the diff I believe.

If you’re referring to Mad Mike’s NC chassis Miata, may I respectfully point out that it uses a four-rotor engine?
