I like speed as much as the next guy (unless the next guy is Charlie Sheen) but that sort of thing is hard to justify unless you are racing to the hospital with someone bleeding to death beside you, and even then you’d have to balance the fact that you might take many more people with you when you crash.

Ch Insp Vickers said even police officers who are trained to drive at high speed would not have driven at 157mph on this road.

“The A46 on that stretch has side turnings and obviously it’s got the roundabout and slow moving traffic as well, and the stopping distances involved at that sort of speed are quite huge,” he said.

“To drive at this speed is unbelievably dangerous and irresponsible.”

However, I’d also want the radar detector gun checked. I think those cars are limited to 155, and I’ve been at a sustained 140 in a V10 M5 on a straight-as-arrow desert highway with nothing in sight for 20 miles (near unlimited sight distance) and that was plenty damn scary. I can’t imagine it’d be possible for the average driver to actually do 157 on the road pictured.

And I owe Lincolnshire an apology. Driver was from Watford. (Although, that doesn’t stop him from being born in Lincolnshire, I suppose)
